AUA: The World’s Preeminent Urological Association

The American Urological Association (AUA), founded in 1902, is the premier professional association for the advancement of urologic patient care, and works to ensure that its more than 16,000 members are current on the latest research and practices in urology. The AUA also pursues its mission of fostering the highest standards of urologic care by providing a wide range of services—including publications, research, the Annual Meeting, continuing medical education (CME) and the formulation of health policy.

Both the specialty of urology and the AUA have a rich history, with the specialty dating back to ancient times and the association to its founding by Ramon Guiteras in 1902. The AUA is governed by its board of directors, which includes six officers, eight section representatives and a group of non-voting consultants. There are a variety of categories for membership, but all members are expected to adhere to the association’s Code of Ethics. Every specialty needs a support system—to allow physicians to network and collaborate and increase educational opportunities. Urologists in the United States and around the world recognize the AUA as that system.
