Meet the 2008 – 2009 Mentors

Richard K. Babayan, MD

Dr. Babayan is Chairman of the Department of Urology, Chief of Urology and Director of the Renal Lithotripsy Unit at Boston Medical Center. He is also the Director of the Boston University Prostate Center. Dr. Babayan received his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine and did his urology residency at Boston University Medical Center.

He is an Assistant Editor for the Journal of Endourology and the Endourology Newsletter and has authored and co-authored nearly 100 peer-reviewed articles. Dr. Babayan belongs to 16 medical associations and has held more than 30 committee positions and nine executive positions. He has served on the AUA Laparoscopy, Research and Investment committees and held the position of President of both the New England Section of the AUA and the Armenian American Medical Association. Dr. Babayan is a member of the AUA Board of Directors and has been a member of the AUA since 1983.

Brendan M. Fox, MD

Dr. Fox is a senior faculty member and Clinical Professor of Urology at the University of Connecticut Health Center, Division of Urology/Department of Surgery. He served as President of the AUA from 2004 to 2005, AUA Historian from 1997 to 2002 and President of the New England Section of the AUA from 1982 to 1985. He also served on numerous AUA committees and has held various offices in the Connecticut Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and the Hartford County Medical Association. Dr. Fox is the recipient of the Hartford Medical Association's Distinguished Service Medal and the New England Section of the AUA's Joseph B. Dowd Lifetime Achievement Award. He has been a member of the AUA since 1972.

Sushil S. Lacy, MD

Dr. Lacy has been on the faculty at the University of Nebraska Medical School since 1970. He is presently Clinical Professor of Urology and is in private practice in Lincoln, NE with six other urologists. He received his medical degree from Christian Medical College, Vellore, India, completed his post-graduate general surgery residency in Lucknow, India, his vascular surgery fellowship at Duke University and his urology residency training at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. He has served on the AUA Board of Directors and several AUA committees. He presently serves on the Urology Care Foundation Development Council and American Association of Clinical Urologists (AACU) Board of Directors. He has held the office of President of the American Association of Clinical Urologists, South Central Section of the AUA and Nebraska Urological Association (NUA). Dr. Lacy has been a member of the AUA since 1973.

Paul F. Schellhammer, MD

Dr. Paul F. Schellhammer is a Professor of Urology at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and a partner in Devine-Tidewater Urology, Ltd. He is internationally recognized for his expertise in the treatment of prostate cancer. He joined the EVMS faculty in 1974 and served as Chairman of the Department of Urology from early 1990 until July 2000. Dr. Schellhammer is Immediate Past President of the AUA Board of Directors, and he serves on the AUA Awards Committee and the AUA Program Committee, in addition to having served on numerous other committees. Dr. Schellhammer has been a member of the AUA since 1977.

Steven M. Schlossberg, MD

Dr. Steven M. Schlossberg is Professor of Urology at Eastern Virginia Medical School; Managing Partner, Urology of Virginia; and Vice President, Medical Informatics Management Committee. Dr. Schlossberg received the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award from the College of William and Mary Executive Master of Business Administration Program. Dr. Schlossberg has been a member of the AUA since 1987 and is currently serving as the Chair of the AUA's Health Policy Council.

J. Brantley Thrasher, MD

Dr. Thrasher has served on numerous national committees, including the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC); as Kansas State Representative to the Board of Directors of the South Central Section of the AUA; as Chair of the Fellowship Committee for the Society of Urologic Oncology; and the Public Media (previous chair), Practice Guidelines, Prostate Cancer Guidelines (vice-chair) and Audio-Visual Committees of the AUA. He is the Secretary of the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO), Chair of the Metropolitan Kansas City Committee on Applicants of the American College of Surgeons and President-elect of the South Central Section of the AUA. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Dr. Thrasher has been a member of the AUA since 1994.
