Visiting Scholar Program Background

The AUA Visiting Scholar program was established in 1995 to allow one urologist scholar from an underserved country to visit the United States, during which the scholar observes urologic surgeries/procedures, attends clinics and staff activities. The scholar does not perform hands-on surgery. To fund this educational opportunity, the AUA generously financially supports this program with monthly stipends, travel expenses and accommodations.

In 1997, the AUA Board of Directors agreed to focus this program on the Western Hemisphere and since, has been working exclusively with the Confederacion Americana de Urologia (CAU). CAU submits the materials for one nominee and one alternate. The nomination is reviewed and recommended by the AUA International Relations Committee.

In its current format, the program allows one CAU scholar to visit one U.S. host institution for a three month period, which is then followed by a partner site in a South American country, as determined by CAU. AUA coordinates the U.S. rotation until the initial three-month period is complete, at which time CAU takes over responsibility for the second half of that year's program.

Questions regarding the program should be directed to the Committee Affairs Department at comaff@AUAnet.org. Applications must be made through CAU at www.caunet.org.
