2010 RESIDENCY MATCH RESULTS ANNOUNCED

LINTHICUM, JANUARY 25, 2010—Earlier today, medical students wishing to specialize in urology learned where they will complete their residency; results were issued this morning to the 337 students and 114 programs registered and submitted preference lists for the 2010 Residency Match for Urology.

Of the 445 students registered, nearly 76 percent submitted preference lists and vied for 268 available residency slots. Of those who submitted lists, 260 (77 percent) matched. Of the total participants, 23 percent did not match; only eight program vacancies went unfilled.

On average, participants submitted 45 applications to programs, with programs receiving an average of 152 applications total. Programs granted an average of 33 interviews, with potential residents taking an average of 10 interviews. Matched applicants had an average of 13.2 programs on their preference lists.

“The Match this year was just amazing,” said Anthony Y. Smith, MD, urology program director at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. “It wasn’t just the ‘paper quality’ of the applicants; the applicants for the Match this year were some of the finest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet and interview.”

The 2010 Match results also continue to show an increase in the number of female graduates applying for and matching with urology programs. This year, 61 of 76 female participants (80 percent) matched with programs, compared to 66 percent in 2009.

“Based on this applicant pool, the future of urology would appear to be very bright,” Dr. Smith said.

The American Urological Association conducts the Match annually on behalf of the Society of University Urologists.  Following application to and interviews by urology residency programs around the country, applicants and programs submit their preference lists.  The AUA has been performing the Match for more than 20 years.  Statistics on past Match results can be found here: http://www.auanet.org/content/residency/residency-match.cfm#statistics.
