AUA FOUNDATION AWARDS STEPHEN A. ZDERIC, MD, WITH JOHN W. DUCKETT PEDIATRIC UROLOGY RESEARCH EXCELLENCE AWARD

LINTHICUM, MD, March 25, 2010–Stephen A. Zderic, MD, of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, has won the AUA Foundation’s John W. Duckett Pediatric Urology Research Excellence Award, an annual award honoring a researcher who has contributed immensely outstanding research and work in the field of pediatric research and for enhancing the treatment of children suffering with urologic conditions and improving their quality of life. Mrs. Peggy Duckett - Drach and the AUA Foundation will present the award at the annual AUA Foundation Research Scholars Breakfast on May 31, 2010, during the 2010 AUA Annual Scientific Meeting in San Francisco, CA.

Dr. Zderic currently serves as professor of urology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and is a staff urologist at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is a known and respected expert in the field of pediatric urology research, having authored three books, 39 book chapters, and more than 115 peer-reviewed articles and article reviews. He has received more than $6 million of research support from the National Institutes of Health, which funded 12 of his projects. Dr. Zderic’s research interests include pediatric bladder function, bladder outlet obstruction, pediatric urinary tract infections, and pediatric gender assignment.

“Dr. Zderic is an exemplary member of the pediatric urology research community,” said AUA Foundation Executive Director Sandra Vassos, MPA. “We are proud to honor Dr. Duckett’s memory by awarding such a renowned researcher in the field.”
This is the inaugural John W. Duckett Pediatric Urology Research Excellence Award, created in memory of Dr. Duckett (1936-1997), who was a pediatric urologist, senior surgeon and director of the urology division at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). The John W. Duckett Research Fund was created through the extraordinary efforts of Mrs. Duckett – Drach and the Society for Pediatric Urology.

“I wanted to create this award with the AUA Foundation and the Society for Pediatric Urology to honor my late husband, who was a firm believer in research and innovation in the field,” said Mrs. Peggy Duckett‐Drach, one of the original award benefactors.
