LAC Chair, Dr. James Ulchaker, Attends a Meeting in Washington, DC
The Alliance of Specialty Medicine, which consists of a coalition of 13 national medical specialty societies representing approximately 100,000 physicians and surgeons, conducted a roundtable meeting on October 3 with high-ranking officials from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
The meeting included a productive discussion with Chief Medical Officer and Director of the CMS Office of Clinical Standards and Quality, Patrick Conway, MD, MSc, regarding the value-based modifier program and the difficulties physicians were having meeting its requirements. The topics of Meaningful Use, Electronic Health Record (EHR) incentives and EHR standards and certification were also discussed with the administrators of these programs, Elizabeth Holland, MPA, Director, HIT Initiatives Group, Office of E-Health Standards and Services at CMS, and Kevin Larsen, MD, FACP, Medical Director, Meaningful Use, Office of the National Coordinator (ONC). Each presented on these initiatives and welcomed feedback from Dr. Ulchaker on the difficulties being experienced by urologist’s meeting the requirements of these programs.
The Alliance of Specialty Medicine continues to grow in stature and recognition on Capitol Hill as the voice of Specialty Medicine. The Chair of the Health Policy Council, Dr. David Penson, is also actively involved with the Alliance.
