Have you ever wondered, "How can I become more involved in the future of the AUA?" Have you wondered what goes on "behind the scenes" of the AUA and how your association conducts its business to serve you and the needs of urologists every day?
If you answered "yes" to the above and are 1-15 years out of training, you are a prime candidate to apply for a future AUA Leadership Program Class! The application phase for the 2012-2013 AUA Leadership Program will open in August 2011. The AUA Leadership Program encourages younger members who have demonstrated leadership skills and an interest in further developing those skills to become the AUA leaders of tomorrow.

WHO: American Board of Urology (ABU) certified urologists, 15 years or less out of training who have demonstrated leadership skills and an interest in developing these skills to serve their sections and the AUA as future volunteer leaders. They must also be Active members of the AUA and the AUA section where they live and practice.
Three individuals from each of the following AUA sections will be chosen to participate in the program, Western, North Central, South Central and Southeastern sections. And, two individuals from each of the following AUA sections will be chosen to participate in the program, New York, New England, Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic.
WHAT: Applications for the 2012-2013 AUA Leadership Program will be received at the AUA and then sent to the applicant's section for review and selection. The program provides the opportunity for younger members to polish their leadership skills, take advantage of networking opportunities and get better acquainted with all the AUA has to offer. The program requires a commitment of in-person meetings, as well as participation in two on-line education programs requiring about 2 hours of time for each. The program's kickoff weekend at AUA Headquarters, during the summer of 2012, will be packed with excellent speakers, networking opportunities with peers, mentors and other VIP's and time for the class to get to know one another. All expenses will be paid by the AUA and the sections. The graduation ceremony will be held at the 2013 Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA.
WHEN: Applications are being accepted until Friday, December 30, 2011. The chosen participants will be announced at the 2012 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA, where there will be a social event for program participants to get to know one another and meet classmates from previous leadership program classes. The program will begin with the Kickoff Meeting at AUA Headquarters in July or August of 2012.

2012–2013 AUA Leadership Program Instructions
Purpose: |
To identify urologists who have demonstrated strong leadership skills within organized medicine or community involvement and have an interest in further developing these skills. The Leadership Program is geared toward preparing these individuals to assume future roles of responsibility within the AUA. |

Selection Criteria: |
Based on careful review of the applications and accompanying materials, the eight AUA Sections will each select applicants to participate as part of the 2012–2013 AUA Leadership Program and notify the AUA of their selection no later than March 31, 2012. They will select nominees based on:
strength, enthusiasm and relevance of the applicant's essay
strength of recommendations from references
commitment and contributions to AUA/section activities, programs, committees
commitment and achievements in medical and non-medical leadership opportunities
community service and volunteer activities
15 years or less out of training and a member of the AUA and section |
Commitment: |
Chosen applicants agree to participate fully in all of the activities of this program including:
attendance at AUA Annual Meeting Welcome/Social Event – May 2012 (Atlanta, GA)
two night/two-day Kickoff Meeting – July/August 2012 (Linthicum, MD)
completion of two on-line educational components (2 hours each) – Fall 2012, Spring 2013
two night/two-day Advocacy Meeting – March 2013 (Washington, DC)
class graduation ceremony—AUA Annual Meeting – May 2013 (San Diego, CA) |
Notification Process: |
Letters will be mailed to all applicants regarding their acceptance status. |
Funding: |
Thanks to the joint sponsorship of the eight AUA sections and the national AUA, there will be no out of pocket expenses associated with the nominees' participation in this program. |
