The American Urological Association (AUA) has approximately 300 volunteers who serve on various committees and hundreds more who help with AUA's publications and annual meeting scientific program. As these volunteers serve as the association's backbone, this site provides an easy and user friendly way for members to explore the wide range of volunteer opportunities the AUA has to offer. Whether you can only commit a minimal amount of time, lend your expertise for a specific committee or project or are interested in a long term commitment the AUA has something for you. Level I Activities - Episodic or Short-Term Assignments
These volunteer opportunities require a limited time commitment ranging from one week to one month.
1. Annual Meeting - Abstract Review Teams
Dr. Robert Flanigan, AUA Secretary, is looking for volunteers to peer review abstracts submitted for the AUA Annual Meeting. To date we receive approximately 6,000 abstracts and the review time is approximately one month.
Job Requirements: Area of expertise needed varies based on abstract topic.
Time Commitment: Review time is approximately one month per year in October or November.

2. Annual Meeting - Session Moderators
The AUA Annual Meeting hosts approximately 140 moderated poster session and 100 moderated podium sessions each year. Each session requires moderators with various urological expertise. Moderators are responsible for introducing authors/presenters, keeping the sessions on-time and moderating the question/answer section. Poster session moderators are also responsible for selecting a “best poster” for each session they moderate.
Job Requirements: Various expertise is needed and utilized each year.
Time Commitment: Work is done during the Annual Meeting only (May).

3. Prize-Essay Review
The AUA features prize-essay awards in the following categories: a. Socioeconomics b. Clinical Research c. Lab Research. The AUA staff utilizes a group of experts in these areas to review and score submitted manuscripts.
Job Requirements: Prefer volunteers with 3-5 years of active urology practice.
Time Commitment: 2-3 weeks during month of December.

4. Mentoring (May only)
Each year the AUA hosts residents from Japan, China, India and Brazil at its Annual Meeting. Volunteer your time to mentor one of these residents and help them navigate and enjoy the annual meeting experience. Must be a veteran AUA Annual Meeting attendee and willing to devote your experience to a young international Resident.
Job Requirements: Knowledgeable about the AUA Annual Meeting and able to answer related questions.
Time Commitment: The week of Annual Meeting (May).

5. Translator – Various Time Commitment Levels
In order to better unite urologists around the world, the AUA is translating a variety of its products and services into other languages. We are asking for assistance from AUA members that are fluent in a language other than English to offer their translation services. There are varying levels of commitment depending on the project and the volunteer’s availability. Please be sure to list the languages for which you are able to assist.

Content Review Committee – Description
Oversees all AUA CME activity, ensures material to be free of bias. Recent activities include implementation of web-based system. Scope expanded to include AUA Section meetings, review of webinars and other on-line courses, screening of all annual meeting courses and review of those at “high risk” and rapid review of select plenary sessions immediately prior to annual meeting.
Job Requirements: Content Reviewers should be practicing physicians 1-5 years out of residency and beyond fellowship training.
Time Commitment: Individuals typically conduct reviews 1-3 times per year (throughout the year).

4. Journal of Urology Peer Review
The Editors of The Journal of Urology, the official journal of the American Urological Association, are always looking for volunteers to build-up our current reviewer database.
Job Requirements: Area of expertise needed varies based on article topic.
Time Commitment: Your review time is based on article topics and content each month. The Journal of Urology is published monthly and you will be asked to review based on your area of expertise and content each month.

Level III Activities - High Profile Multi-Year Assignments
The AUA, as a leading medical organization has opportunities to elect individuals to represent the AUA to other affiliated organizations. Candidates for these positions must have extensive AUA experience (section/committee activities) and broad knowledge of the association. These volunteer opportunities require in-person meeting several times per year, participation teleconferences and travel to affiliated associations throughout the year. You will be representing the AUA to these associations.
1. American Board of Urology (ABU)
Individuals who are nominated for these positions to represent the AUA are renewed and recommended by AUA's Nominating Committee which itself is compromised of members from AUA Sections. Inquiries through the below link will be forwarded to those Section offices.
American Board of Urology (ABU).
The American Board of Urology, Inc. is organized to encourage study, improve standards, and promote competency in the practice of urology. The objective of the Board is to identify for the public’s knowledge those physicians who have satisfied the Board’s criteria for certification and recertification in urology. The Board arranges and conducts examinations testing the qualifications of voluntary candidates and grants and issues certificates to accepted candidates duly licensed to practice medicine. The certificate is the property of the Board, which the Board holds the power to revoke. The Board also evaluates and examines individuals for recertification.
The AUA has four (4) Trustee positions with the American Board of Urology, each serving a 6 year term. Each is appointed by ABU based on AUA providing a list of 10 nominees. AUA's List from previous year may be refreshed/confirmed with additions/deletions documented and communicated to ABU.

2. American College of Surgeons (ACS)
American College of Surgeons (ACS).
The AUA has the following representation with the American College of Surgeons: Two (2) Representatives and One (1) Alternate to the Board of Governors (Attachment B), One (1) Member to the Advisory Council for Urology (Attachment C), One (1) Member to the Commission on Cancer (Attachment D), One (1) Member to the American Joint Committee on Cancer (Attachment E), One (1) Member to the Young Surgeons Section (Attachment F), and One (1) Regent (Attachment G). All positions are confirmed/announced following the ACS Annual October Meeting. All Representatives must be a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
