Target Audience
This course is designed for urologists who have experience with laparoscopic techniques and are seeking to enhance their abilities to perform advanced laparoscopic oncological procedures. Oncologic surgeons who are seeking to expand their abilities into robotic laparoscopic surgery may also benefit from this course.
Bring your surgical team! Physician Assistant and OR Staff instruction will be presented.
Surgeons are urged to bring their Physician Assistant and OR Staff to this Robotics and Advanced Laparoscopy course to train as a team.
An optional Surgical Robot Basic Skills Training Course will be offered January 25. This optional course is ideal for surgeons who are not familiar with the robotic console. Robotic and Advanced Laparoscopy Course attendees who have not worked with a surgical robot previously are strongly urged to enroll in this optional course. Additional Fees Apply.
Course Description/Purpose/Need
Minimally invasive urology has evolved into an integral part of the treatment of urologic cancer. The modern management of prostate, renal, adrenal and bladder cancer requires a working knowledge of laparoscopic and robotic techniques. In order to perform advanced minimally invasive urology procedures, open surgical principles must be integrated with those of laparoscopy and robotic-assisted laparoscopy.
This course provides a structured approach to robotic and advanced laparoscopic surgery for urologic oncology. The specific surgical techniques will be presented in a step-by-step operative outline. Issues such as optimal positioning, port placement, dissection techniques, and methods to facilitate dissection and reconstruction will be discussed. The procedure will then be demonstrated in a live case surgery with expert faculty to provide commentary and offer specific tips and tricks related to each technique. Attendees will then practice the specific surgical skills on inanimate, animate and/or cadaveric models for each of the surgical procedures. Panel discussions with expert faculty will address methods to recognize and address complications and problems for each of the surgical procedures. The course will devote full days concentrating on each of the following areas: prostate cancer, bladder cancer and renal cell cancer.
OPTIONAL Surgical Robot Basic Skills Training Course
This course is ideal for surgeons who are not familiar with the robotic console. Robotic and Advanced Laparoscopy Course attendees who have not worked with a surgical robot previously are strongly urged to enroll in this optional course.
The Surgical Robot Basic Skills Training Course has been developed and vetted by the AUA Laparoscopy and Robotic Surgery Committee and is anticipated to become the AUA Recommendations for surgeon accreditation for use of the clinical robot nationally. This one day instruction will include inanimate hands-on robotic skills training. This includes the following skill task exercises:
Peg transfer, Robot Docking/Undocking and Instrument Transfer
Pattern Cutting or passing the loop over the wire
Interrupted Suturing
Continuous Suturing
Vesicourethral Anastomosis on a model
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this advanced robotic and laparoscopic urology course, participants should be able to:
demonstrate the surgical steps of robotic surgery procedures for bladder, prostate and kidney cancer
analyze the robotic techniques unique to the surgical management of bladder and prostate cancer, and the robotic and standard laparoscopic techniques unique to the surgical management of renal cancer, specifically partial nephrectomy
discuss the key complications, and outline the intra-operative and post-operative management related to robotic surgery procedures for bladder and prostate surgery, as well as robotic and standard laparoscopic procedures for partial nephrectomy
apply the laparoscopic and robotic surgical skills of suturing and knot tying related to urethrovesical anastomosis , continent diversion and partial nephrectomy
Course Schedule
The Advanced Robotic Urologic Oncology three day course will be held from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. beginning Thursday, January 26. The course will end at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, January 28. Each day will have a different focus, encompassing Prostate, Kidney, and Bladder Cancers. Continental breakfast and Lunch with the Experts will be included daily. Click here for course agenda.
