Course Director:
R. Ernest Sosa, MD

Target Audience
Urologic surgeons familiar with open nephrectomy techniques are candidates for this course. Prior experience in laparoscopic surgery is helpful but not a prerequisite.

Course Description/Purpose/Need
Each course is limited to 20 participants to allow for individualized attention. This course is designed for urologists interested in acquiring or expanding their skills in laparoscopic surgery. Didactic presen-tations will cover indications, contraindications, patient selection, preparation and positioning for surgery. Lectures and video presentations will detail operating room (OR) setup, instrumentation and step-by-step surgical techniques for performing radical nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy and nephroureterectomy. Participants will have hands-on experience in a supervised animate laboratory practicum.

HALS is much easier to learn than standard laparoscopy. Novice or intermediate level laparoscopists have found that the presence of a hand in the operative field gives them a tactile sense and three-dimensional orientation that is missing in standard laparoscopy. Over half of the prior course participants have incorporated hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy into their practices.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • select patients appropriate for surgery using HALS techniques
  • perform patient preparation, OR setup and safely position the patient for laparoscopic surgery
  • employ the laparoscopic instrumentation covered in this course
  • apply the surgical techniques taught and rehearsed in the hands-on laboratory to patient care
  • discuss the complications associated with HALS, their prevention, early recognition and correction
