Description/Purpose/Need
The American Urological Association (AUA) is proud to offer a FREE Prostate Cancer Webinar Series on many topics related to the treatment of prostate cancer, presented by expert faculty from around the country. The AUA is proud to offer a the first of a series of FREE Prostate Cancer Webinars on many topics related to the treatment of prostate cancer, presented by expert faculty from around the country. This is an opportunity to gain 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ for each webinar you view without leaving your home or office.
During the last 10 years there have been significant advancements in radiotherapy for prostate cancer which have directly improved outcomes and effectively reduced long-term treatment related toxicities. Randomized trials have now established that improved survival outcomes can be achieved for locally advanced disease with combined androgen deprivation and external beam radiotherapy. Similar phase III studies have now demonstrated the importance of using escalated radiation dose levels to achieve optimal tumor control outcomes. New technologies such as intensity modulated radiotherapy and image-guided radiation therapy has resulted in enhanced precision to target necessary high doses to the prostate and achieving concomitant reduction of dose to surrounding normal structures leading to reduced long-term complications. Similar improvements have been made for prostate brachytherapy (low-dose rate and high-dose rate treatments) in the form of real-time conformal treatment planning and image-guided approaches which continue to improve the accuracy of seed placement and lead to greater reduction of treatment-related morbidities.
Attendance is limited for the live program. 30-minute program with a 15-minute question-and-answer period following the presentation. Program will also be available on-line the day after the live event.
Target Audience
This program is designed for all who treat prostate cancer, primarily urologists and radiation oncologists, with additional interest during September for internists, family practice and allied health professionals.
Learning Objectives
After completing this module, the participant will be able to:
- Describe the indications for combined androgen deprivation therapy and radiotherapy for patients with locally advanced disease.
- Discuss the role of dose escalation for patients with localized prostate cancer.
- Summarize the importance of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) for enhancing the conformality of radiation dose delivery and the observed reduction of treatment-related side-effects.
- Identify the recent technological enhancements in LDR and HDR prostate brachytherapy and the role these treatments play in the management of clinically localized disease and salvage therapies
