Robotic vs. Open Prostatectomy: The Real Story

Description/Purpose/Need
The American Urological Association (AUA) is proud to offer a FREE Prostate Cancer Webinar Series on many topics related to the treatment of prostate cancer, presented by expert faculty from around the country. The AUA is proud to offer a the first of a series of FREE Prostate Cancer Webinars on many topics related to the treatment of prostate cancer, presented by expert faculty from around the country. This is an opportunity to gain 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ for each webinar you view without leaving your home or office.

There is ongoing debate about the merits of open vs. robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. Having performed over 2,000 procedures of each type of surgery, Joseph A. Smith Jr., M.D. will present an objective overview of the technical details which affect patient outcomes for both surgical approaches. Comparative results will be discussed along with patient selection factors.

Attendance is limited for the live program. 30-minute program with a 15-minute question-and-answer period following the presentation. Program will also be available on-line the day after the live event.

Target Audience
This program is designed for all who treat prostate cancer, primarily urologists and radiation oncologists, with additional interest during September for internists, family practice and allied health professionals.

Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Compare patient related outcomes for radical retropubic prostatectomy to robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy
  2. Identify technical details which can improve patient outcomes with either surgical approach
  3. Determine which selection factors which may influence the decision of which surgical procedure is preferred in an individual patient

Accreditation
The American Urological Association (AUA) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The AUA takes responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of this CME activity.

Credit Designation
The American Urological Association designates this educational series for a maximum of 5.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ or each webinar activity for 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

AUA Disclosure Policy
As a provider accredited by the ACCME, the AUA must insure balance, independence, objectivity and scientific rigor in all its activities.
