Advancing Urology around the World
The AUA has a long history of involvement in the international urologic community. Increased globalization of the professional urologic community has become a reality, and the AUA is well positioned to help our partners around the world meet the significant challenges that will affect the specialty of urology in both the near and distant future.
The geographic breadth of the AUA's membership fosters valuable exchanges between urologic professionals throughout the world and provides unparalleled networking opportunities, promoting the sharing of the latest in research, technology and treatment to ensure the highest quality care for patients everywhere.
Bringing the World Together through Education
Each year, more than 15,000 attendees from more than 95 countries participate in the AUA Annual Scientific Meeting, with 50 percent of all attendees coming from outside North America. Moreover, more than half of all AUA abstracts are submitted by researchers based outside the United States, making the AUA Scientific Meeting the leading global forum for urologic education and networking opportunities.
In addition to plenary presentations, exhibits and Office of Education courses, the AUA offers a number of other programs, including guest lectures, international affiliate meetings, language programs, forums and lunch with the experts sessions, for all Annual Meeting attendees.
Connecting the World of Urology
The AUA recognizes that the interchange of urological skills, expertise and knowledge is critical to the continued success of urology in the world community. As such, the AUA has established a variety of exchange programs to provide outstanding and promising junior faculty with an opportunity to interact with and learn from colleagues abroad. These programs include academic exchanges, visiting professorships and resident programs.
In order to enhance the involvement of AUA's international members within the organization, the AUA has revised its bylaws to permit international members to be officially appointed to AUA Committees. The AUA also has two separate international committees:
- International Relations Committee (IRC): The IRC is comprised of multinational urological associations. It serves as a forum to share experiences and knowledge as well as to make recommendations to improve urological education and healthcare throughout the world.
- International Member Committee (IMC): The IMC allows the AUA to more effectively reach out and communicate to international urologists and to provide a mechanism for international members to bring their concerns and suggestions to the AUA in an organized way.
The AUA values its collaborative partnerships with urological organizations throughout the world and strives to foster new relationships with our international colleagues. Two examples of this commitment include:
- The AUA's grant to IVUmed (formerly International Volunteers in Urology) assists in IVUmed's mission of making quality urological care available to people worldwide.
- The AUA's hosting of the 4th International Congress on the History of Urology at the corporate headquarters in November 2008. The aim of the Congress is to familiarize young urologists with the lessons that history can offer as a guide to future advancements in the field.
