Comments: This 1 year intensive Fellowship in Endourology, Laparoscopy and Robotic Surgery at the Urology Center of Excellence and the International Robotic Prostatectomy Institute in Miami is designed to train future leaders in the field of Minimally-Invasive Urology. The program admits 2 applicants each year to be Fellows at the Institute with the possibility of being hired at the end of the program as Faculty. This would of course depend on the Fellows performance during the training program. The center is one of the busiest in the world with respect to "Robotic Prostate Surgery" and at the end of his/her training the Fellow should be very comfortable performing advanced Endourological, Laparoscopic and Robotic procedures. We already have one Fellow for July 2011 and are looking for a suitable candidate to fill in the second vacant slot. |

Comments: This is a unique opportunity for a chief resident who decided late to specialize in pediatric urology.
This fellowship which began in July of 2007, is under the directorship of Bradley P. Kropp, MD, FAAP, Professor and Chief of the Section of Pediatric Urology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Additional faculty members include Associate Professor Dominic Frimberger, MD, Professor William G. Reiner, MD, Associate Professor Amy Wisniewski, PhD and Associate Professor HK Lin, PhD.
The two-year fellowship includes 12 months of basic science research and 12 months of pediatric outpatient and surgical urology. The program offers unique research opportunities during the first year with the use of a state-of-the-art research facility devoted to tissue engineering for bladder augmentation as well as the opportunity to work with outstanding nationally recognized basic science researchers. Additionally, several clinical research trials on reflux and intersex are available for participation by the fellow.
During the clinical year, the fellow will work with each of the pediatric urology surgeons and learn not only general pediatric urologic surgery techniques but also distinctive subspecialty surgical protocols such as robot-assisted, major reconstructive pelvic, genital and renal surgeries as well as laparoscopic reconstructive procedures.
In addition, during the clinical year, the fellow will be highly involved in multispecialty treatment modalities for children with myelomeningocele, intersex, exstrophy and other major genitourinary birth defects. One unique outpatient opportunity available during this fellowship is the chance to work with a world renowned child psychiatrist and urologist who specializes in the psychological and physiological aspects of children born with anomalous genitalia. |

Program Description
This is a one-year fellowship with a clinical instructor appointment. During this year, the fellow is expected to take call on the faculty rotation usually once every 5 weeks. The time distribution for the fellowship year is 80% clinical and 20% in the laboratory with time spent at the Long Beach Veterans Administration hospital as well as at UC Irvine. The Endourology fellows are considered the team leaders for laboratory and clinical research and will directly manage undergraduate students, medical students, as well as international visiting fellows. The fellows lead their section of the weekly laboratory meeting to communicate the latest progress of existing projects and to brainstorm new ideas for study.
The laboratory experience in which the fellow will be leading and supervising the laboratory experiments and researchers. The focus of the laboratory efforts will be on endourological, laparoscopic, robotic, and translational research. We encourage each individual fellow to tailor projects that stimulate his/her interest and expand his/her technical skill sets in order to create an extremely productive year. The projects are aimed at addressing existing clinical challenges in urology and surgery, but may be of any realm in medicine.
The clinical focus is to develop technical skills in the operating room, develop familiarity and dexterity with advanced instrumentation, and learn surgical judgment. The breadth of procedures will cover oncologic, endourological, laparoscopic, and robotic techniques. Additionally, the fellow will be responsible for the design and implementation of clinical trials, for the enrollment of patients in clinical studies, and for the interpretation and effective presentation of the data and results. This often leads to multiple manuscripts being produced. The fellow will also run their own clinic one half day per week and will therefore be able to generate their own cases as well as be involved with the cases of the three attendings that compose the endourology service.
