Von Brunn’s Nests

  1. Normal urothelium is 5-7 cells thick with umbrella, intermediate, and basal cells (see normal histology section)
  2. Von Brunn’s nests are considered a "normal" finding on biopsies, and may be identified in 85-95% of patients, particularly in the region of the trigone.
  3. Histologic features:
    • well-circumscribed nests of benign urothelial cells within the lamina propria
    • may or may not have an obvious connection to the overlying mucosal surface
    • most commonly identified in the trigone of the bladder
