Bladder

  1. Function: store urine; micturition
  2. Histologic features;
    1. lined by transitional epithelium (urothelium) on a basement membrane
    2. Lamina propria: lies between mucosal basement membrane and the muscularis propria; may contain wisps of smooth muscle but usually does not display fully-developed muscularis mucosa; consists predominantly of loose connective tissue with nerves, vasculature and lymphatics.
    3. Muscularis propria: consists of three loosely arranged layers of smooth muscle and elastic fibers that contract during micturition
