Efferent Ductules

  1. Function: reabsorption of fluid
  2. Consist of: 12-15 tubules that arise from the rete testis
  3. Histologic features:
    1. some cells are tall columnar and ciliated, containing brown pigment
    2. Other cells are short and non-ciliated, containing brown pigment
    3. The overall appearance is therefore one of a "sawtooth pattern" of tall cells alternating with short cells
    4. Ciliary activity propels spermatozoa toward the epididymis
    5. A thin band of smooth muscle surrounds each ductule.
