Retroperitoneal Cysts

  1. Benign retroperitoneal cysts are usually mesothelial or mesonephric in origin; rarely, rupture of the biliary tree can result in bile-filled cysts
  2. Gross features: by definition, these cysts are not connected to the kidney or adrenal; usually filled with clear or straw-colored fluid.
  3. Histologic features: these cystic structures may be lined by mesothelial, enteric (glandular), or columnar epithelium.
