Mesoblastic Nephroma: Cellular Variant

Histologic features:

  • may be more cellular than the classical form of mesoblastic nephroma
  • cells may be polygonal or spindled.
  • margins may appear to be more "pushing" than infiltrative
  • high mitotic rate (8-30 mitoses per 10 high power fields)
  • cysts are more commonly seen in this variant than in the classical form of mesoblastic nephroma.

The cellular variant has been considered by some to carry a worse prognosis: however, to date, the evidence seems to suggest that as long as surgical resection is complete, both the classical and cellular forms of mesoblastic nephroma behave in a benign fashion
