Renal Cell Carcinoma

  1. Cytogenetics: 3p-, 5q+
  2. Associations:
    • von Hippel-Lindau disease
    • Tuberous Sclerosis
    • Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease
    • Acquired cystic renal disease
    • ? familial RCC
  3. Gross: golden yellow tumor with hemorrhage and necrosis; +/- cystic changes
  4. Microscopic:
    • water-clear cells in "chicken wire" vasculature
    • the delicate capillary structure often ruptures during surgical manipulation, resulting in the formation of “blood lakes”
    • some cells may have granular eosinophilic cytoplasm (used to be called “granular cell RCC”, but that term is no longer used).
    • Nuclear grading based on Fuhrman classification (grades I-IV).
