Chromophobe Renal Cell Carcinoma

  1. Cytogenetics: Loss of chromosomes, but NOT 3p-
  2. Gross: solitary, solid, beige or light brown, well-circumscribed
  3. Histology:
    • cells have flocculent cytoplasm that condenses around the edges of the cell, contributing to the appearance of thick prominent cell borders
    • I have found that the nuclei tend to be much more pleomorphic than is seen in a typical clear cell renal cell carcinoma or an oncocytoma (which is the main differential diagnosis in this case).
    • Hale’s colloidal iron stain is positive in chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (cells stain bright blue), but negative in clear cell RCC and in oncocytoma.
