American Urological Association - Squamous Cells
- Represents 5% of bladder tumors, and is associated with chronic inflammatory conditions (calculi, diverticula, cord bladder, and schistosomiasis).
- Cytologic features:
- Frequently present as invasive ulcerated lesions, so cytology specimens tend to have a bloody inflammatory background with lots of necrotic debris.
- Cells usually have dense or "hard" pink cytoplasm (keratinized) and large hyperchromatic nuclei (image A) & (image B).
