  • Benign retroperitoneal cysts are usually mesothelial or mesonephric in origin; rarely, rupture of the biliary tree can result in bile-filled cysts.
  • Gross: by definition, these cysts are not connected to the kidney or adrenal; usually filled with clear or straw-colored fluid (image A).
  • Histology: these cystic structures may be lined by mesothelial, enteric (glandular), or columnar epithelium (image B).
