Pathology for Urologists

Mixed (Focal) Atrophy

  • Defined as presence of normal seminiferous tubules admixed with atrophic tubules. Generally the two types of tubules have a lobular arrangement.
  • Primary mixed atrophy is observed in patients with cryptorchidism (both in cryptorchid testis as well as in contralateral testis), in patients with retractile testes, and in patients with chromosomal abnormalities (Down's syndrome, 47XXY, 46XX, giant Y chromosome, and Klinefelter's syndrome).
  • Secondary mixed atrophy is observed in patients with varicoceles and following chemotherapy.
