Riccardo Autorino, MD, PhD
AUA/EAU Academic Fellowship Exchange Program

Riccardo Autorino, MD, PhD, is one of three selected fellows for the 2009 AUA/EAU Academic Fellowship Exchange Program. Dr. Autorino of Somma Vesuviana, Italy, is an attending urologist and assistant professor of urology at AOU Policlinico, Second University of Naples (SUN). He holds an interest in uro-oncology, endourology and laparoscopy, benign prostatic hyperplasia and urolithiasis. Dr. Autorino received his medical degree from Federico II University of Naples and his PhD in urological sciences at SUN.

Dr. Autorino has co-authored nearly 75 publications in PubMed-indexed journals, and has presented abstracts at several national and international meetings. He serves as title and abstract editor for Wiley-Blackwell Asia – International Journal of Urology, and an editorial board member of European Urology and European Urology Supplements. Dr. Autorino is also a member of the Italian Society of Urology, Endourological Society, Italian Endourological Association, Societè Internationale d'Urologie, Italian Society of Uro-onoclogy and Italian Polispecialistic Society Young Surgeons.

As part of the AUA/EAU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Autorino will spend three weeks enriching his urologic education touring Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Lahey Clinic in Boston and Massachusetts General Hospital before attending the 2009 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Axel Haferkamp, MD

AUA/EAU Academic Fellowship Exchange Program

Axel Haferkamp, MD, is one of three fellows selected for the 2009 AUA/EAU Academic Fellowship Exchange Program. Dr. Haferkamp, of Germany, is an associate professor of urology and vice chairman of the Department of Urology at the University of Heidelberg. Dr. Haferkamp has also served on the advisory board of the Tissue Bank of the National Center for Tumour Disease, and is vice chairman of the German Urological Society's Functional Diagnostics and Female Urology Working Committee. He received his medical degree after attending RWTH-Aachen and Philipps-University Marburg.

Dr. Haferkamp's work in urology has earned him many honors, including the Congress of the Southwest Section of the German Urological Society's Werner Staehler Award in 2008 and the Congress of the NRW Society of Urology's Paul-Mellin Award in 2004. He has authored 85 publications over the past three years.

Takashi Imamoto, MD, PhD

Takashi Imamoto, MD, PhD
AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Takashi Imamoto, MD, PhD, has been named one of two AUA Japanese Visiting Scholars in the 2009 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program. Dr. Imamoto earned his medical and doctoral degrees from Chiba University’s Graduate School of Medicine, where today he is an associate professor of urology.

Dr. Imamoto’s areas of expertise include clinical research on prostate cancer, male infertility, andrology and laparoscopic surgery; he has authored nearly 30 articles in professional journals in these areas. Dr. Imamoto is a member of 12 professional and scientific societies, including the Japanese Cancer Association and the Japan Society of Andrology.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Imamoto will spend one month enriching his urologic education at the University of California, San Francisco and will attend the 2009 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Francisco Kanasiro, MD

AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Francisco Kanasiro, MD, was named one of two 2009 AUA Brazilian Visiting Scholars in the 2009 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Program. Dr. Kanasiro serves as chief of ambulatory of voiding dysfunction and the Laboratory of Urodynamics at Santa Marcelina Hospital, and practices urology at Casas André Luiz in Guarulhos and São Mateus Hospital in São Paulo.

Dr. Kanasiro is also the preceptor of urology at Santa Marcelina Hospital in São Paulo, where he completed his residency in urology. Dr. Kanasiro earned his medical degree and completed his residency in general surgery from the University of São Paulo Medical School.

As part of the AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Kanasiro will enrich his urologic education at Wake Forest University and will attend the 2009 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Juan Ignacio Martínez-Salamanca, MD, MIR

Juan Ignacio Martínez-Salamanca, MD, MIR
AUA/EAU Academic Fellowship Exchange Program

Juan Ignacio Martínez-Salamanca, MD, MIR, is one of three selected fellows for the 2009 AUA/EAU Academic Fellowship Exchange Program. Dr. Martínez-Salamanca of Madrid, Spain is an attending urologist at the Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda in Madrid.

Dr. Martínez-Salamanca earned his medical degree after attending cycles at Universidad Complutense de Madrid's Centro de Estudios San Pablo CEU and Doce de Octubre University Hospital. He received his internal resident degree (MIR) in urology service from the Gregorio Marañón Universitary General Hospital. In 2007, he completed a clinical research fellowship on robotic prostatectomy and urologic oncology outcomes at New York-Presbyterian Hospital's Weill Medical College at Cornell University.

Dr. Martínez-Salamanca has received nine grants for his work in urology, and has participated in five research projects. Dr. Martínez-Salamanca serves on the editorial board for the European Society for Sexual Medicine's Web site and newsletter. He is also a member of the Spanish Association of Urology, Madrileña Urological Society and the International Society for Sexual Medicine.

Paulo José de Medieros, MD, PhD

AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Paulo José de Medieros, MD, PhD, was named one of two 2009 AUA Brazilian Visiting Scholars in the 2009 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Program. Dr. de Medieros is an assistant professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) and head of urology ambulatory at UFRN's University Hospital Onofre Lopes. He received his medical degree from UFRN and his master's degree in urology from the University of São Paulo (USP) School of Medicine.

Dr. de Medieros completed his residency of general surgery and residency in urology at the Hospital of Clinics at Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine at USP. His article, titled "Pheochromocytoma treated by laparoscopic surgery" was published in the USP Faculty of Medicine's journal Revista do Hospital das Clínicas.

As part of the AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. de Medieros will enrich his urologic education at Wake Forest University and will attend the 2009 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Mizuki Onozawa, MD, PhD

Mizuki Onozawa, MD, PhD
AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Mizuki Onozawa, MD, PhD, has been named one of two AUA Japanese Visiting Scholars in the 2009 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program. Dr. Onozawa is an assistant professor at the Institute of Clinical Medicine at the University of Tukuba in Ibaraki, Japan, where he received both his medical and doctoral degrees.

 

Dr. Onozawa holds an interest in urologic oncology, chemoprevention of prostate cancer and urolithiasis. He has authored six scientific papers on these areas, published in peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Onozawa is also a member of the Japanese Cancer Association, Japanese Society of Clinical Oncology and the Japanese Society of Endourology and ESWL.

 

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Onozawa will spend one month enriching his urologic education at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and will attend the 2009 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Fernando Secin, MD, PhD

Fernando Secin, MD, PhD
AUA South American Visiting Scholar

Fernando Secin, MD, PhD, of Argentina, was chosen as the 2009 AUA South American Visiting Scholar. Dr. Secin is a staff urologist at Centro de Educación Médica e Investigaciones Clínicas (CEMIC), a nonprofit university hospital in Buenos Aires. He also practices at the Swiss Medical Group and MEDICUS S.A., where he specializes in urologic oncology.

Dr. Secin earned his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires, School of Medicine and completed his residency at CEMIC. He completed three years of urologic oncology clinical and research training at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York before returning to Argentina. He has contributed to more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and his work in urology has earned him numerous grants and awards, including “Best Poster Presentation” at the 2007 AUA Annual Meeting.

As part of the AUA Visiting Scholar Program, Dr. Secin will spend two months enriching his urologic education at the Cleveland Clinic and will attend the 2009 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Robert J. Stein, MD

AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Robert J. Stein, MD, has been selected as the 2009 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Stein is co-director of Robotic Surgery and associate staff in the Department of Urology’s Center of Laparoscopy and Robotic Surgery at the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. He serves on the Cleveland Clinic Department of Urology’s Education Sub-committee, and is a co-advisor for the department’s urology consultation service. Dr. Stein is also the co-director of the Advanced Laparoscopy, Robotics and Endourology fellowship program, in which he was fellow from 2006-2007.

Dr. Stein received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Pittsburgh. He has authored and contributed to nearly 150 selected abstracts, book chapters, peer-reviewed publications and presentations.

As part of the AUA/SBU Exchange Program, Dr. Stein will attend the Biennial Meeting of the SBU, held November 7-11, 2009. There, he will present at the plenary session, speaking on robotic prostatectomy and renal surgery. After the meeting, Dr. Stein will spend approximately one month visiting Brazilian institutions, including ABC University, Albert Einstein Hospital, Hospital das Clínicas, Hospital de Ipanema and Unirio, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend clinics and staff activities.

Rongpei Wu, MD, PhD

AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Rongpei Wu, MD, PhD, is one of two Chinese Visiting Scholars in the 2009 AUA/Chinese Urological Association (CUA) Academic Exchange Program. Dr. Wu has worked in the field of urology for more than 10 years, and is currently an associate professor at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, the same institution at which he completed his medical degree, residency, master of surgery and PhD.

Dr. Wu specializes in endourology, and has focused his work in areas such as percutaneous nephrostomy, ureteroscopy, laparoscopy and transurethral resection of the prostate. He also holds a strong interest in the molecular markers of urinary system tumors. More than 10 articles authored by Dr. Wu have been published in core science journals. Dr. Wu also heads a Guangdong Natural Science Foundation research project, investigating the proteme of renal cell carcinoma, and leads as one of four main researchers in a project that focuses on urinary system tumors.

As part of the AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Wu will spend one month enriching his urologic education at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and will attend the 2009 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Kexin Xu, MPhil, MD

Kexin Xu, MPhil, MD
AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Kexin Xu, MPhil, MD, is one of two Chinese Visiting Scholars in the 2009 AUA/Chinese Urological Association (CUA) Academic Exchange Program. Dr. Xu is a clinical professor in the Department of Urology at Peking University People's Hospital (PKUPH). He focuses on bladder care, and also serves as PKUPH's Director of International Affairs Office. Dr. Xu completed his master of medicine degree at the University of Hong Kong, and received his medical degree at Peking University.

Dr. Xu has focused his clinical and research interests on the mechanism and treatment of bladder cancer, voiding dysfunction and prostatic diseases. He has authored 26 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed international and local journals. He also serves as an editorial board member of the Chinese Bladder Cancer Guideline, and is currently a youth member of the Chinese Urological Association.

As part of the AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Xu will spend one month enriching his urologic education at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and will attend the 2009 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago.
