AUA 2010 Exchange Scholars

Takashige Abe, MD, PhD
AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Takashige Abe, MD, PhD, has been named a 2010 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Abe is an assistant professor in the Department of Urology at Hokkaido University Hospital in Sapporo, Japan.

Dr. Abe attended the Hokkaido University School of Medicine, where he received his medical degree and PhD from the university’s graduate school. Throughout his career, Dr. Abe has authored more than 10 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and has delivered nearly 10 presentations at national and international meetings.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Abe attended the AUA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA from May 29 – June 3, 2010. Prior to the meeting, Dr. Abe visited the University of California, Irvine, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Mayank Mohan Agarwal, MD
AUA/IAUA Chakrobortty Fellow

Mayank Mohan Agarwal, MD, has been named a 2010 AUA/Indian American Urological Association (IAUA) Chakrobortty Fellow. Dr. Agarwal is an assistant professor in the Department of Urology at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and its associated Nehru Hospital in Chandigarh, India. His main interests include endourology, urodynamics and female urology.

Dr. Agarwal earned his medical degree from Maulana Azad Medical College and its associated L.N. Hospital, G.B. Pant Hospital and Guru Nanak Eye Hospital in New Delhi, India. He has authored more than 50 publications and delivered nearly 25 presentations on the topics of laparoscopy, endourology, neurourology and female urology. In the past five years, Dr. Agarwal has also been active in organizing international educational workshops throughout India.

As part of the AUA/IAUA Chakrobortty Fellowship Program, Dr. Agarwal attended the AUA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA from May 29 – June 3, 2010. Dr. Agarwal visited the University of California, Los Angeles prior to the Annual Meeting and afterward visited Wake Forest and The University of Alabama, Huntsville, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Piyush Kumar Agarwal, MD
AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Piyush K. Agarwal, MD has been named a 2010 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Agarwal is the director of robotic bladder surgery at the Henry Ford Hospital’s Vattikuti Urology Institute in Detriot, MI.

Dr. Agarwal earned his medical degree from the Weill Cornell Medical School in New York, NY, and completed his residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. He then went on to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, where he completed a fellowship in urologic oncology. Dr. Agarwal has authored and contributed to several manuscripts, presentations and abstracts. He is a former TAP CaPSURE™ scholar and has particular interests in prostate and bladder cancer. He also has an interest in the delivery of urological care across different nations.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Agarwal attended and delivered a lecture at the JUA Annual Meeting in Morioka, Japan from April 27 – 30, 2010. Prior to the conference, Dr. Agarwal visited Tokyo Medical University Hospital, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Gedson Evaristo de Santi, MD
AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Gedson Evaristo de Santi, MD, has been named a 2010 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Santi is in private practice in Londrina, Paraná with 16 other urologists. He also practices at the Consórcio Intermunicipal de Saúde do Médio Paranapanema (CISMEPAR, Public Health Service and Family Planning Service) in Londrina.

Dr. Santi received his medical degree from Fundação Universidade Estadual de Londrina (Foundation State University of Londrina) in 1987. After graduation, Dr. Santi served in the Brazilian army as second Lieutenant, MD, in Curitiba and the State of Santa Catarina. He also attended the Health School of Benfica, and graduated from the Brazilian army as first Lieutenant, MD. Following his graduation, Dr. Santi studied urology at the Central Army Hospital in Rio de Janeiro until 1994, when he volunteered to work in the Amazonian jungle at the triple border of Brazil, Perú and Colombia.

As part of the AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program Scholar Program, Dr. Santi attended the AUA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA from May 29 – June 3, 2010. Prior to the conference, Dr. Santi visited the University of Texas Southwestern, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Stephen J. Freedland, MD
AUA/EAU Academic Fellowship Exchange Scholar

Stephen J. Freedland, MD, has been named a 2010 AUA/ European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Fellowship Exchange Scholar. Dr. Freedland is an associate professor in Duke University School of Medicine’s Division of Urologic Surgery. He also serves as director of the division’s Outcomes and Translational Research and as associate program director of urology residency.

Dr. Freedland received his medical degree from the University of California Davis School of Medicine. A former AUA Foundation Research Scholar, Dr. Freedland has been awarded 12 research grants; his work has earned him many honors including the more recent first prize in the 2007 and 2009 AUA/ACMI Prize Essay Contest, Clinical and Laboratory Research Categories, respectively. An author of more than 350 research papers and abstracts, he is also a reviewer of nearly 45 peer-reviewed journals and an abstract reviewer for meetings of various urologic associations.

As part of the AUA/EAU Academic Fellowship Exchange, Dr. Freedland attended and delivered a lecture at the EAU’s Annual Congress in Barcelona, Spain from April 16 – 20, 2010. Prior to the conference, Dr. Freedland visited Comenius University Bratislava (Slovakia), Ludgwig-Maximilians-Universitat (Germany), University of Padova, Monoblocco Ospedaliero (Italy) and Hospital Universitario Fundacion Alcoron (Spain), where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Jim Hu, MD, MPH
AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Jim Hu, MD, has been named a 2010 AUA/Chinese Urological Association (CUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Hu is the Director of Urologic Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital and an associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. He is also the Director of the Prostate Cancer Center at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

Dr. Hu received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, and completed his residency at the University of California, Los Angeles. With a research focus on quality of life and outcomes of therapies for prostate cancer, Dr. Hu has received funding as the principal investigator through a Lance Armstrong Young Investigator Award, a Prostate Cancer SPORE Career Development Award from Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center and a U.S. Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Physician Training Award.

As part of the AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Hu attended and delivered several lectures at the CUA's Annual Meeting. Prior to the conference, Dr. Hu visited Changhai Hospital in Shanghai where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Kazuto Ito, MD, PhD
AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Kazuto Ito, MD, PhD, has been named a 2010 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Ito is an associate professor in the Gunma University School of Medicine’s Department of Urology in Gumna, Japan, the same institution from which he received his medical degree and PhD.

An author of 70 publications, Dr. Ito is also a reviewer and editorial board member for multiple international journals. He has also served as a reviewer of three guidelines on prostate cancer screening.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Ito attended the AUA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA from May 29 – June 3, 2010. After the conference, Dr. Ito visited the University of California, San Francisco, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Anup Kumar, MD
AUA/IAUA Chakrobortty Fellow

Anup Kumar, MD, has been named a 2010 AUA/Indian American Urological Association (IAUA) Chakrobortty Fellow. Dr. Kumar is an assistant professor of urology in the Department of Urology at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, India.

With interests in endoscopy, laparoscopy and robotics, Dr. Kumar has authored 30 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has delivered nearly 40 presentations in India and abroad. He also serves as a reviewer of six international journals.

As part of the AUA/IAUA Chakrobortty Fellowship Program, Dr. Kumar attended the AUA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA from May 29 – June 3, 2010. Prior to the conference, Dr. Kumar visited Henry Ford Hospital and University of Southern California, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Edmar L. S. Lopes, MD
AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Edmar L. S. Lopes, MD, has been named a 2010 AUA/ Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Lopes is a urologist at the Eunapolis Regional Hospital and the Eunapolis Municipal Polyclinics.

Dr. Lopes received his medical degree from the University of Rio de Janeiro’s School of Medicine and Surgery. After graduation, he served as a medical official for the Central Hospital of the Army Medical Official of the Army Central Hospital in the urology and intensive care units. Dr. Lopes completed his residency in general surgery at Hospital Orêncio De Freita and his residency in urology at State Service Hospital.

As part of the AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program Scholar Program, Dr. Lopes attended the AUA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA from May 29 – June 3, 2010. Prior to the conference, Dr. Lopes visited Lahey Clinic, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Surena F. Matin, MD
AUA/EAU Academic Fellowship Exchange Scholar

Surena F. Matin, MD, has been named a 2010 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Fellowship Exchange Scholar. Dr. Matin is an associate professor in The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Department of Urology in Houston, TX.

Dr. Matin received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College. An author of nearly 200 publications, Dr. Matin has also developed various manuals, teaching aids and other educational resources. His dedication to teaching has earned him many honors, including the more recent Health & Science Communications Association’s Gold Award for his Robotic Radical Prostatectomy Patient Informed Consent and Education Video. He has also been invited to speak at more than 150 courses and training programs and conferences.

As part of the AUA/EAU Academic Fellowship Exchange, Dr. Matin attended the EAU’s Annual Congress in Barcelona, Spain from April 16 – 20, 2010. Prior to the conference, Dr. Matin visited Comenius University Bratislava (Slovakia), Ludgwig-Maximilians-Universitat (Germany), University of Padova, Monoblocco Ospedaliero (Italy) and Hospital Universitario Fundacion Alcoron (Spain), where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Jeanne O'Brien, MD
AUA/SBU Academic Fellowship Exchange Scholar

Jeanne O'Brien, MD, has been named a 2010 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. O'Brien is an assistant professor of urology at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Dr. O'Brien received her medical degree from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. She completed her residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and completed her fellowship in male infertility at the University of Toronto. With an interest in history, Dr. O'Brien has authored numerous medical history publications and has delivered presentations at meetings in the United States and abroad; she is a recipient of the AUA Retrospectroscope Award, and her work has been selected for presentation in the AUA History Forum.

As part of the AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. O'Brien attended the Congresso Paulista de Urologia in Sao Paulo. Prior to the conference, Dr. O'Brien visited Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto, Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (University of Sao Paulo) and Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), where she had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Ruben Olivares, MD
AUA South American Visiting Scholar

Ruben Olivares, MD, has been named the 2010 AUA South American Visiting Scholar. Dr. Olivares is an assistant professor, internalship director and secretary of research in the Universidad Diego Portales’ Department of Urology. Dr. Olivares also practices at Clínica Indisa and Hospital de Carabineros de Chile.

Dr. Olivares attended Universidad de Chile School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree and completed his residency. He completed his fellowship in advanced laparoscopic urologic surgery at Clinica Santa Maria, Santiago. Dr. Olivares has authored nearly 15 journal publications and has delivered more than 75 presentations at national and international meetings.

As part of the AUA South American Visiting Scholar Program, Dr. Olivares attended the AUA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA from May 29 – June 3, 2010. Prior to the conference, Dr. Olivares visited the Cleveland Clinic, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Ganesh S. Palapattu, MD
AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Ganesh S. Palapattu, MD, has been named a 2010 AUA/Urological Society of India (USI) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. In August 2009, Dr. Palapattu was appointed chief of urological oncology at the Methodist Hospital/Weil Cornell Medical School. Prior to this appointment, he was an assistant professor and assistant residency program director in the University of Rochester School of Medicine's Department of Urology.

Dr. Palapattu earned his Doctor of Medicine from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. He completed his residency at the David Geffen School of Medicine of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and subsequently completed a fellowship in urologic oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute as an Urology Care Foundation Scholar. Dr. Palapattu has authored and contributed to more than 100 abstracts, presentations, lectureships and publications. His work in research has earned him numerous honors including the AUA Foundation/Astellas Rising Star in Urology Award and the AUA North Eastern Section Young Investigator Award.

As part of the AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Palapattu attended and delivered a lecture at the Urological Society of India's Annual Conference in Agra, India, from February 4-7, 2010. During the exchange, he also visited Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, India, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend clinics and staff activities.

J. Kellogg Parsons, MD, MHS
AUA/EAU Academic Fellowship Exchange Scholar

J. Kellogg Parsons, MD, MHS, has been named a 2010 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Fellowship Exchange Scholar. Dr. Parsons is an assistant professor of surgery and urology at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and a staff investigator at the UCSD Moores Cancer Center.

Dr. Parsons received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and his master of health science from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He completed residency training and a fellowship in urologic oncology at the Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Brady Urological Institute. The author of more than 95 articles and book chapters, Dr. Parsons has co-edited three textbooks and received several awards, including first prize in the national AUA/Olympus Gyrus ACMI Research Essay Contest. With a focus on the epidemiology, prevention and treatment of urological cancers and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), his research has received multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Department of Defense, including a Physician Research Training Award to study diet-based interventions for prostate cancer. He is also the lead investigator in several multi-center clinical trials.

As part of the AUA/EAU Academic Fellowship Exchange, Dr. Parsons attended the EAU’s Annual Congress in Barcelona, Spain from April 16 – 20, 2010. Chad W. M. Ritenour, MD
AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Chad W. M. Ritenour, MD, has been named a 2010 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Ritenour serves currently as an assistant professor of urology at Emory University and as a staff urologist at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. He is the director of Outpatient Services and the Men’s Health Center in Emory’s Department of Urology. Dr. Ritenour attended the University of Virginia, where he was an Echols Scholar. He then matriculated to the Medical College of Virginia, graduating in 1995, and later completed his internship and residency in urology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

Dr. Ritenour has special clinical interests in sexual dysfunction and benign prostate disorders. His research interests include the evaluation and treatment of erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease. Dr. Ritenour is the department’s Residency Program Director and works extensively with medical students rotating through the Department. He is the current president of the Georgia Urological Association and a member of multiple other organizations. Dr. Ritenour has received several honors including Alpha Omega Alpha, a Pfizer Scholar in Urology award and election to the Woodruff Leadership Academy at Emory University. He has contributed to multiple publications in the urologic literature.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Ritenour attended the JUA Annual Meeting in Morioka, Japan from April 27 – 30, 2010. Prior to the conference, Dr. Ritenour visited Teikyo University, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Aseem R. Shukla, MD
AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Aseem R. Shukla, MD, has been named a 2010 AUA/Urological Society of India (USI) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Shukla is the director of pediatric urology and director of the urologic surgery residency program in the University of Minnesota's Department of Urologic Surgery. He also serves as the director of urology at the university's Children's Hospital.

Dr. Shukla received his medical degree from the University of South Florida, where he also completed his residency. He was a fellow in pediatric urology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Division of Pediatric Urology at the University of Pennsylvania. Throughout his career, Dr. Shukla has been committed to advancing pediatric urology around the world; he has made nearly 10 trips to India to deliver presentations and demonstrate pediatric urology techniques, and he is frequently invited to participate in academic meetings throughout India.

As part of the AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Shukla attended and delivered a lecture at the Urological Society of India's Annual Conference in Agra, India, from February 4-7, 2010. Prior to the conference, Dr. Shukla visited Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital in Nadiad, India, and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, India, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics. Dr. Shukla also visited the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, India, where he organized and completed an IVUmed-sponsored urological teaching course on exstrophy, epispadias and hypospadias.

Yi Zhang, MD
AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Yi Zhang, MD, MD, has been named a 2010 AUA/Chinese Urological Association (CUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Zhang is a senior urologist at Peking University Shougang Hospital’s Wu Jieping Urological Medical Center in Beijing, China. He is also an associate professor of surgery at Capital University of Medical Sciences in Beijing, China, where he also earned his medical degree.

With a specialization in endourology, Dr. Zhang has established the leading program of simulation training in endoscopic urologic surgery, which is now a formal course within the CUA’s continuing medical education program. He is responsible for curriculum design, instruction, training model experimentation and program supervision. Dr. Zhang’s research in this area, as well as topics such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) treatment and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), has been published in multiple international journals.

As part of the AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Zhang attended the AUA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA from May 29 – June 3. Prior to the conference, Dr. Zhang visited the University of California, Irvine, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Hui Zhu, MD
AUA/CUA Academic Fellowship Exchange Scholar

Hui Zhu, MD, has been named a 2010 AUA/Chinese Urological Association (CUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Zhu is an attending urologist at the University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center and the MetroHealth Medical Center of Cleveland.

Dr. Zhu received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University at St. Louis. His interests in urologic oncology led him to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he completed his fellowship in urological oncology. He has authored numerous publications in the areas of urological oncology, reconstructive urology and general urology.

As part of the AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Zhu attended and delivered several lectures at the CUA's Annual Meeting. Prior to the conference, Dr. Zhu visited Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.
