AUA 2011 Exchange Program Scholars

Geoffrey N. Box, MD
AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Geoffrey N. Box, MD, has been named a 2011 AUA/Urological Society of India (USI) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Box is an assistant professor and the director of laparoscopic urologic surgery in The Ohio State University's Department of Urology.

Dr. Box received his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and completed his residency at The Ohio State University Medical Center. He holds numerous editorial positions, and currently serves as a reviewer for The Journal of Endourology, Urology, UroToday, and Journal of Robotic Surgery. Dr. Box has authored numerous publications on topics including laparoscopic surgery, and has delivered more than 60 presentations in the United States and abroad. He has also served as a director or faculty member for nearly 20 courses.

As part of the AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Box attended the USI Annual Meeting (USICON 2011) in Kolkata, India. Prior to the conference, Dr. Box visited Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH) and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Tomasz Borkowski, MD, PhD
AUA/EAU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Tomasz Borkowski, MD, has been named a 2011 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Borkowski is a urologist in the Department of Urology at the Medical University of Warsaw, where he obtained his medical and doctoral degrees.

With an interest in urologic oncology and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Borkowski has authored numerous scientific papers in national and international publications on these topics. He is also credited with bringing and implementing modern laparoscopic surgery within his institution's Department of Urology. Dr. Borkowski is active on the scientific committees for the Polish Urological Association Congress, the EAU's Central European Meeting and the European Urology Congress.

As part of the EAU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Borkowski will attend the AUA2011 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Prior to the conference, he will visit Northwestern University, the University of Illinois, Cornell University and Johns Hopkins University, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Michael Cerqueira, MD
AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Michael Cerqueira, MD, has been named a 2011 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Cerqueira is a urologist at Alcides Carneiro Hospital, Hospital SMH - Portuguese Beneficence and Hospital Saint Teresa.

Dr. Cerqueira received his medical degree from the University of the Grande Rio, and completed his residency at Alcides Carneiro Hospital. Specializing in kidney transplantation and cryoablation for prostate and kidney cancer, he has authored papers and delivered presentations in these areas at nearly 20 national meetings. In 2009, Dr. Cerqueira traveled to the Denver Health Medical Center/University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and completed a visiting professorship in the institution's Division of Urology.

As part of the AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program, he will attend the AUA2011 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Prior to the conference, he will again visit the Denver Health Medical Center/University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Christian Gratzke, MD
AUA/EAU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Christian Gratzke, MD, has been named a 2011 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Gratzke is an assistant professor of urology at Ludwig-Maximilian-University (LMU) of Munich, the same institution at which he earned his medical degree and completed his residency.

After completing an 18-month research fellowship that focused on new targets for the treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), Dr. Gratzke founded and now supervises a uropharmacology lab at LMU Munich. He has received many honors for his work, including the 2010 Maximilian Nitze Prize, the German Urological Association's highest scientific award for outstanding achievement in experimental or clinical urology.

As part of the EAU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Gratzke will attend the AUA2011 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Prior to the conference, he will visit Northwestern University, the University of Illinois, Cornell University and Johns Hopkins University, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Zhiquan Hu, MD
AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Zhiquan Hu, MD, has been named a 2011 AUA/Chinese Urological Association (CUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Hu is a urologist at Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

Dr. Hu received his medical degree from Tongji Medical University. With a focus on urologic oncology, he has published several papers in national and international journals.

As part of the AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Hu will attend the AUA2011 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Prior to the conference, he will visit the Cleveland Clinic, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Haruki Kume, MD
AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Haruki Kume, MD, has been named a 2011 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Kume is an associate professor in the University of Tokyo's Department of Urology, where he also completed his medical degree and urology training.

Dr. Kume's main interest is laparoscopic surgery. He has authored more than 60 papers in national and international journals.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Kume will attend the AUA2011 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Prior to the conference, he will visit the University of California, Los Angeles, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Satoru Muto, MD, PhD
AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Satoru Muto, MD, has been named a 2011 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Muto is an associate professor in the Teikyo University School of Medicine's Department of Urology.

Dr. Muto received his medical degree from Akita University School of Medicine. He completed his residency and earned his doctoral degree from the University of Tokyo. Dr. Muto has several awards for his work, including the 2009 Best Abstracts Award from Eastern Regional Meeting of the Japanese Society of Nephrology, and the 2009 Excellent Abstracts Award from Annual Meeting of the Japan Society of Clinical Oncology.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Muto will attend the AUA2011 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Prior to the conference, he will visit Duke University, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Rishi Nayyar, MD
AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Rishi Nayyar, MD, has been named a 2011 AUA/Urological Society of India (USI) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Nayyar is an assistant professor of urology in the Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in New Delhi, India.

Dr. Nayyar earned his medical degree from Maulana Azad Medical College, and completed his urology training at All India Institute of Medical Sciences. With an interest in minimally invasive urology, including robotics, laparoscopy and endourology, Dr. Nayyar has published several papers in peer reviewed journals. He has also been actively involved in organizing various national and international level conferences held at his institution.

As part of the AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Nayyar will attend the AUA2011 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Prior to and after the conference, he will visit Henry Ford Hospital, the University of Southern California, Wake Forest University and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Leonardo Reis, MD, MSc
AUA South American Visiting Scholar

Leonardo Reis, MD, MSc has been named the 2011 AUA South American Visiting Scholar. Dr. Reis is an assistant professor in the Division of Urologic Oncology at the University of Campinas, UNICAMP in Brazil.

Dr. Reis earned his medical degree from the Catholic University of Campinas PUC-Campinas School of Medical Sciences, and received his urology training at University of Campinas, UNICAMP. He has authored more than 40 published indexed papers on the topics of urologic oncology, clinical and experimental research, and evidence-based medicine. Dr. Reis' work has earned him many honors including the 2010 "Best of Poster" award at the AUA2010 Annual Meeting and the invitation to moderate sections on "Bladder Cancer Basic Research" at the AUA2010 and AUA2011 Annual Meetings.

As part of the 2011 AUA South American Visiting Scholar program, Dr. Reis will attend the AUA2011 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Prior to the conference, he will visit Columbia University, where he will have the opportunity to spend some time in the laboratory, to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Hemendra N. Shah, MD
AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Hemendra N. Shah, MD, has been named a 2011 AUA/Urological Society of India (USI) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Shah is a practicing urologist at S. L. Raheja (Fortis) Hospital in Mumbai. He also serves as a visiting consultant at the Institute of Urology, Dhule, India.

Dr. Shah received his medical degree from B. J. Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital, Pune in Maharashtra, India. He completed his urology training at Sir JJ Group of Hospitals and Grant Medical College in Mumbai. Dr. Shah has completed two international training programs in which he traveled to the United States as a visiting observer. He has also been invited to speak at more than 70 national and international conferences, workshops and courses.

As part of the AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Shah will attend the AUA2011 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Prior to the conference, he will visit Wake Forest University, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Puneet Sindhwani, MD
AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Puneet Sindhwani, MD, has been named a 2011 AUA/Urological Society of India (USI) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Sindhwani is the director of renal transplantation at the Oklahoma Transplant Center, the Children's Hospital of Oklahoma, and the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He also holds numerous other positions within the Center for Reproductive Health and Fertility, the VA Medical Center-Oklahoma City and the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Sindhwani earned his medical degree from Government Medical College in Patiala, India. He completed his residency at the Medical College of Ohio. Dr. Sindhwani is active on numerous committees, including the Guideline on the Management of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): 2010 Update Panel in which he served as a Guideline Peer Reviewer. His work has earned him invitations to speak at more than 70 conferences across the country.

As part of the AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Sindhwani attended the USI Annual Meeting (USICON 2011) in Kolkata, India. Prior to the conference, Dr. Sindhwani visited Dayanand Medical College in Ludhiana and Post Graduate Institute in Chandigarh, Punjab, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Paolo Verze, MD, PhD
AUA/EAU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Paolo Verze, MD, PhD, has recently been named a 2011 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Verze is a urologist and researcher at the Urology Clinic and Urinary Lithotripsy Center of the University of Naples "Federico II" where he earned his medical and doctorate degrees upon completion of his residency.

His interests include mini-invasive surgery, particularly laparoscopic surgery, and he has authored more than 20 publications in national and international journals and books in the field of urology. He has recently joined the Young Academic Urologists Association of the EAU and is also an active member of the Educational Project Committee of the Italian Society of Urology (SIU), as well as the Italian Society of Andrology where he serves on the Scientific Committee.

As part of the EAU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Verze will attend the AUA 2011 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Prior to the conference he will be visiting Northwestern University, the University of Illinois, Cornell University and Johns Hopkins University, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures as well as participate in staff activities and attend clinics.

Shuo Wang, MD
AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Shuo Wang, MD, has been named a 2011 AUA/Chinese Urological Association (CUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Wang is a professor of urology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. He also serves as vice-chairman of the institution's Department of Urology.

Dr. Wang received his medical degree from Zhejiang Medical University. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Luebeck and Klinikum Memmingen und Leverkusen. Dr. Wang also currently serves as the secretary general of Zhejiang Urological Association. His research interests include endourology and laparoscopic surgery, as well as basic and clinical research on urinary bladder cancer.

As part of the AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Wang will attend the AUA2011 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Prior to the conference, he will visit the Cleveland Clinic, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Marcelo Wroclawski, MD
AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Marcelo Wroclawski, MD, has been named a 2011 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Wroclawski is an assistant professor of urology at Faculdade de Medicina do ABC – Santo Andre (SP), where he also received his medical degree. He is also a surgeon in the kidney transplantation program at Albert Einstein Jewish Hospital in Sao Paulo.

Dr. Wroclawski completed his surgical residency at Irmandade da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Sao Paulo and his urology residency at Faculdade de Medicina do ABC – Santo Andre (SP). In 2009, he received the Young Talented Urologist Award at the Brazilian Urological Society Meeting. His research and clinical interests are focused on uro-oncology, kidney transplantation and minimally invasive surgery.

As part of the AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Wroclawski will attend the AUA2011 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. After to the conference, he will visit Denver Health Medical Center, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Elizabeth Boettcher Yerkes, MD
AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Elizabeth Boettcher Yerkes, MD, has been named a 2011 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Yerkes is an associate professor in the Department of Urology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and an attending pediatric urologist at Children's Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Yerkes received her medical degree and urology residency training from Vanderbilt University, and completed a fellowship in pediatric urology at the Indiana University School of Medicine's James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children. An active member of numerous pediatric societies and committees, she currently serves as a reviewer for The Journal of Urology®, the official journal of the AUA.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Yerkes will attend the JUA Annual Meeting in Nagoya, Japan. Prior to the conference, she will visit Nagoya City University, where she will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.
