John S. Banerji, MD

John S. Banerji, MD
AUA/IAUA Chakrobortty Fellow

John S. Banerji, MD, has been named a 2012 AUA/Indian American Urological Association (IAUA) Chakrobortty Fellow. Dr. Banerji is an associate professor at Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore.

Dr. Banerji received his medical degree from Christian Medical College, Vellore, and completed his residency at Christian Medical College, Vellore. He has an interest in uro-oncology and minimally invasive urology and robotics, and wants to pursue a fellowship in uro-oncology. He has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals. He is involved in the organization of various academic exchanges at his institution.

As part of the AUA/IAUA Chakrobortty Fellowship, Dr. Banerji will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. In addition, Dr. Banerji will visit Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and Roswell Park Cancer Institute, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

AUA Mexican Visiting Scholar

Román Carvajal, MD, has been named the 2012 AUA Mexican Visiting Scholar. Dr.Carvajal is chief urologist at Regional Hospital Valentin Gómez Farias, I.S.S.S.T.E, Guadalajara, Jalisco México.

Dr.Carvajal received his medical degree from Universidad Autonoma de Nayarit, and completed his residency at Centro Médico Nacional 20 de Noviembre, I.S.S.S.T.E. Dr. Carvajal is titular of the oncology chapter of the Sociedad Mexicana de Urologia. He has experience in castrate resistance clinical investigation and focuses his daily practice in prostate cancer.

As part of the AUA Mexican Visiting Scholar Program, Dr. Carvajal will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. Prior to the conference, Dr. Carvajal will visit Cleveland Clinic, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Shu-Qi Du, MD

Shu-Qi Du, MD
AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Shu-Qi Du, MD, has been named a 2012 AUA/Chinese Urological Association (CUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Du is an associate professor at the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University.

Dr. Du received his medical degree from China Medical University, and completed his residency at the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University. His main area of interest is female urology. He also does basic research in the field of urodynamics, such as overactive bladder.

As part of the AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Du will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. After the conference, Dr. Du will visit Mayo clinic, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Sean Elliott, MD, MS

Sean Elliott, MD, MS
AUA/EAU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Sean Elliott, MD, MS, has been named a 2012 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Elliott is an associate professor at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Elliott received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, and completed his residency and fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Elliott specializes in reconstructive urology with a particular clinical interest in male urethral reconstruction, urinary diversion and male urinary incontinence. His areas of research focus include outcomes of urethroplasty, the long-term urinary adverse effects of pelvic radiotherapy, and patterns and quality of care in the surgical management of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

As part of the AUA/EAU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Elliott attended the EAU Annual Congress and visited Bichat Hospital and CHU Modor Paris (France), Universita Vita e Salute San Raffaele Milan (Italy), and Universitatspital Bern, Bern (Swisse), where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, participate in staff activities and present lectures on various topics.

Arvind P. Ganpule, MD

Arvind P. Ganpule, MD has been named a 2012 AUA/Indian American Urological Association (IAUA) Chakrobortty Fellow. Dr. Ganpule is vice- chairman, Department of Urology, Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH), Nadiad, Gujarat, India. He also is the chief of the Division of Laparoscopy and Robotic Surgery at MPUH, Nadiad, Gujarat, India.

Dr. Ganpule received his medical degree from Dr V.M Medical College, Solapur,India and completed his residency in urology at MPUH, Nadiad, India . He has 59 peer-reviewed publications and 12 book chapters to his credit. His areas of interest include the application of the single port laparoscopic approach in urological diseases. In addition, he is interested in developing a pediatric robotic surgery program at MPUH.

As part of the AUA/IAUA Chakrobortty Fellowship, Dr. Ganpule will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. In addition, Dr. Ganpule will visit The Global Robotics Institute, Comers Children Hospital and the University of Southern California, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Giuliano Betoni Guglielmetti MD, has been named a 2012 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Guglielmetti is a staff urologist at São Paulo State Cancer Institute (ICESP) and member of the Urology Department of Clinical Hospital, University of São Paulo Medical School (HCFMUSP).

Dr. Guglielmetti received his medical degree from University of São Paulo Medical School, and completed his residency at HCFMUSP. He is member of the Urology Department of HCFMUSP working in the Sexual Medicine Group and staff urologist at the ICESP with a focus in minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery.

As part of the AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Guglielmetti will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. Prior to the conference, Dr. Guglielmetti will visit Cleveland Clinic, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Takamitsu Inoue, MD

Takamitsu Inoue, MD, has been named a 2012 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Inoue is an assistant professor at the Department of Urology, Akita University Graduate School of Medicine.

Dr. Inoue received his medical degree from Akita University, and completed his residency at Akita University Hospital. His main areas of expertise are urologic oncology, urologic laparoscopic surgery and renal transplantation.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Inoue will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. Prior to the conference, Dr. Inoue will visit the Department of Urology at Colombia University, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

H. Henry Lai, MD

H. Henry Lai, MD
AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

H. Henry Lai, MD, has been named a 2012 AUA/Chinese Urological Association (CUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Lai is an assistant professor of surgery (urology) at Washington University School of Medicine.

Dr. Lai received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College. He completed his residency and neurourology/female urology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. His research focuses on male and female urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, urodynamics, interstitial cystitis, and chronic prostatitis. Dr. Lai was an Urology Care Foundation Research Scholar from 2005-2006. He is funded by the NIH to study interstitial cystitis and chronic prostatitis through the MAPP (Multidisciplinary Approach to the Study of Chronic Pelvic Pain) Research Network.

As part of the AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Lai will attend and participate in the CUA Annual Meeting and will visit Wujieping Medical Center in Beijing, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures and participate in staff activities.

Joseph Liao, MD

Joseph Liao, MD
AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Joseph Liao, MD, has been named a 2012 AUA/Chinese Urological Association (CUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Liao is an Assistant Professor of Urology at Stanford University and Chief of Urology at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System.

Dr. Liao received his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed his residency training and fellowship in endourology at UCLA, where he was a Urology Care Foundation Scholar. Dr. Liao's clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery and urologic oncology. With funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other federal agencies, he has established an active research program to develop molecular biosensors for urine-based diagnostics and molecular imaging technologies for urological cancer. The author of more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Liao has been an invited speaker and organizer at numerous international conferences in urology, bioengineering, and nanomedicine. He is a frequent member of NIH study sections and has served as a reviewer for over 10 scientific journals.

As part of the AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Liao will attend and participate in the CUA Annual Meeting and will visit Wujieping Medical Center in Beijing, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures and participate in staff activities.

Achim Lusch, MD

Achim Lusch, MD, has been named a 2012 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Lusch is a fellow at the Department of Urology, University of California, Irvine School of Medicine.

Dr. Lusch received his medical degree from the Medical Schools of the Universities of Mainz, Germany and Salt Lake City, USA and completed his residency at Mannheim Medical Center, University of Heidelberg, Germany. He is an assistant medical professor at the University of Mannheim and he is doing a fellowship in Irvine to expand his clinical and research expertise in minimal invasive surgical management of urologic oncology and kidney cancer.

As part of the AUA/EAU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Lusch attended the EAU Annual Congress and visited Bichat Hospital and CHU Modor Paris (France), Universita Vita e Salute San Raffaele Milan (Italy), and Universitatspital Bern, Bern (Swisse), where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, participate in staff activities and present lectures on various topics.

Ja-Hong Kim, MD, has been named a 2012 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Kim is an assistant clinical professor, in the Department of Urology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA Medical Center.

Dr. Kim received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, and completed her residency at Cleveland Clinic. Her main areas of expertise are female urology, urodynamics and reconstructive surgery.

Alexandre Pompeo, MD

Alexandre Pompeo, MD, has been named a 2012 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Pompeo is a urology clinical fellow at Denver Health Medical Center, University of Colorado and a board member of The Young International Association of Urology (European Society of Urology).

Dr. Pompeo received his medical degree from University of Santo Amaro, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and completed his residency at ABC Medical School, Sao Paulo, Brazil. After completing his urology training, Dr. Pompeo participated in the European Residents Program in Prague and became a fellow at the ABC Medical School, Sao Paulo, Brazil where he was approved as a member of the Brazilian Society of Urology. After that he came to the U.S. as a fellow for 2 years in minimal invasive surgery at Denver Health Medical Center, University of Colorado. This year he was invited to be a part of the board of the Young International Urological Association.

As part of the AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Pompeo will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Pompeo will visit Wake Forest University where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Kyoko Sakamoto, MD, has been named a 2012 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Sakamoto is an associate clinical professor at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Sakamoto received her medical degree from Tulane University, School of Medicine, and completed her residency at Loyola University Medical Center. She is the chief of urology at San Diego VA Medical Center. Her interest is in robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgeries and her research is in prostate cancer.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Sakamoto attended and participated in the JUA Annual Meeting and visited Kanazawa University Medical Center, where she had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures and participate in staff activities.

Andrew Southwick, MD

Andrew Southwick, MD, has been named a 2012 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Southwick is an assistant professor at the University of Utah Hospital and Clinics.

Dr. Southwick received his medical degree from The University of Utah Medical School, and completed his residency at The University of Utah Hospital and Clinics. Dr. Southwick is currently involved in clinical trials for surgical management of BPH, high risk prostate cancer, and prostate biopsy complications.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Southwick attended and participated in the JUA Annual Meeting and visited Tokyo Women's Medical University, where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures and participate in staff activities.

Ryan Terlecki, MD

Ryan Terlecki, MD
AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Ryan Terlecki, MD, has been named a 2012 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Terlecki is an Assistant Professor of Urology at Wake Forest University.

Dr. Terlecki received his medical degree and completed his residency at Wayne State University, where he studied under Dr. J. Edson Pontes and Dr. Richard Santucci. He went on to complete two separate fellowships in Reconstructive Urology. His first was in Female Urology, Urodynamics, and Reconstruction at the University of Colorado under Dr. Brian Flynn. His second was in Trauma, Prosthetics, and Male Reconstruction at UT Southwestern under Dr. Alan Morey. He has been published in numerous areas, especially in male urethral reconstruction. His research involves modifications of wound healing and the use of stem cell therapies in urology.

As part of the AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Terlecki will attend and participate in the SBU-Sao Paulo Biennial Meeting and will visit Hospital Souza Aguiar and Universidade Federal de São Paulo, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures and participate in staff activities.

Ivar Vidal, MD

Ivar Vidal, MD
AUA South American Visiting Scholar

Ivar Vidal, MD, has been named the 2012 AUA South American Visiting Scholar. Dr. Vidal is the second in charge of the program of minimally invasive urological surgery at Clinica Indisa and University Andres Bello.

Dr. Vidal received his medical degree and completed his residency in Urology at University of Chile. Dr. Vidal has authored and contributed to several manuscript and presentations in national and international meetings in the field of minimally invasive surgery. He has experience in research and experimental surgery, and presently he is working on the single port laparoscopic surgery (L.E.S.S) and its impact on inflammatory mediators. He is involved in advance laparoscopic surgery in both public and private practice and since 2009 he has contributed to the development of the first program of robotic surgery in Chile.

He also is collaborating with both a national oncology network in Chile and in a public renal transplant program.

As part of the AUA South American Visiting Scholar Program, Dr. Vidal will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. Prior to the conference, Dr. Vidal will visit Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Xiong-jun Ye, MD

Xiong-jun Ye, MD
AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Xiong-jun Ye, MD, has been named a 2012 AUA/Chinese Urological Association (CUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Ye is an associate professor at Peking University People's Hospital.

Dr. Ye received his medical degree from the Institute of Urology, Peking University, and completed his residency at Peking University People's Hospital. His primary interests are in urological oncology (especially kidney cancer and prostate cancer). Dr. Ye won a National Natural Science Fund from China to study Wnt signaling pathway and renal cell carcinoma in 2008. Dr. Ye also treats difficult kidney stones by percutaneous nephrolithotripsy through B-ultrasonography guided.

As part of the AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Ye will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. After the conference, Dr. Ye will visit Mayo Clinic, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Akira Yokomizo, MD

Akira Yokomizo, MD
AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Akira Yokomizo, MD, has been named a 2012 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Yokomizo is an associate professor at the Department of Urology, Kyushu University.

Dr. Yokomizo received his medical degree from Kyushu University, and completed his residency at Kyushu Rosai Hospital and Kyushu University Hospital. He was a research fellow at the Department of Urology, Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) from 1997-1999 and staff surgeon at National Kyushu Cancer Center from 2000-2002.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Yokomizo will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. Prior to the conference, Dr. Yokomizo will visit Duke University and Wake Forest University where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.
