2014 AUA/IAUA Chakrobortty Fellowship

Naveenchandra Ravindra Acharya, MD, has been named a 2014 AUA/Indian American Urological Association (IAUA) Chakrobortty Fellow. Dr. Acharya is an Assistant Professor at the Mediciti Institute of Medical Sciences and Chief of Urology at Ramayya Pramila Urology Hospital.

Dr. Acharya received his medical degree from Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, and completed his residency at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh (PGIMER). Dr. Acharya has several published chapters, presented posters and papers at national meetings, winning the Best Paper Award by the AUA in 2008 and is also reviewer for five medical journals.

As part of the AUA/IAUA Chakrobortty Fellowship, Dr. Acharya will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Prior to the conference, Dr. Acharya will visit the Cleveland Clinic, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Miguel Maldonado Avila, MD, MSc
2014 AUA Mexican Visiting Scholar Program

Miguel Maldonado Avila, MD, has been named a 2014 AUA Mexican Visiting Scholar. Dr. Maldonado is an Assistant Professor of Urology and Director of Research at the Hospital General de México, National Autonomous University of México, México City.

Dr. Maldonado received his medical degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and completed his residency at the Hospital General de México, México City. Dr. Maldonado's main clinical and research interests are focused in male infertility and benign prostate diseases. He has published papers in peer-reviewed International journals, presented papers at national and international meetings, and is the Co-editor of the Mexican Journal of Urology.

As part of the AUA Mexican Visiting Scholar Program, Dr. Maldonado will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Prior to the conference, Dr. Maldonado will visit Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Stephen Boorjian, MD

Stephen Boorjian, MD
2014 AUA/EAU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Stephen Boorjian, MD, has been named a 2014 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Boorjian is a Professor of Urology and the Director of the Urologic Oncology Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. Boorjian received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, and completed his residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center. He subsequently completed a fellowship in urologic oncology at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Boorjian's research interests include optimizing the management for patients with high-risk prostate cancer, evaluating the outcomes among patients undergoing radical cystectomy for bladder cancer, and improving surgical therapy for advanced renal cell carcinoma. Dr. Boorjian has co-authored over 180 manuscripts and book chapters, and was recognized as "Teacher of the Year" in Urology for 2012 by the Mayo Clinic Fellows' Association. He is currently an Assistant Editor at the Journal of Urology, and serves as President of the Young Urologic Oncologists Section of the Society of Urologic Oncology.

As part of the AUA/EAU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Boorjian will attend the EAU Annual Meeting in Stockholm, Sweden. Prior to the conference, Dr. Boorjian will visit UZ Leuven, Belgium, Hôpital Tenon, Paris, VU Medisch Centrum, Amsterdam, and Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

2014 AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Paulo Collet Bruna, MD, has been named a 2014 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Bruna is a practicing urologist at the Hospital do Rim (Kidney's Hospital) and collaborative doctor in the Lithiasis group at Federal University of São Paulo.

Dr. Bruna received his medical degree and completed his residency at Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) Escola Paulista de Medicina. Dr. Bruna has published articles in International Surgery, co-authored several published chapters and presented a poster at the Brazilian Congress of Urology. Dr. Bruna holds a special interest in stone disease (PCNL, flexible ureteroscopy and ESWL).

As part of the AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Bruna will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Arilson de Souza Carvalho, MD, has been named a 2014 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. de Souza Carvalho is a Residency Program Coordinator of Urology at the Urologia do Hospital Evangélico de Belo Horizonte.

Dr. de Souza Carvalho received his medical degree from Faculdade de Medicina de Petrópolis, Brasil, and completed his residency at Médica em Urologia no Hospital Evangélico de Belo Horizonte, Brasil. Dr. de Souza Carvalho is a Board member of the Brazilian Society of Urology, and the President of the vangelical Hospital in Belo Horizonte Medical Cooperative.

As part of the AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. de Souza Carvalho will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Prior to the conference, Dr. de Souza Carvalho will visit the University of Miami where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Igor Frank, MD

2014 AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Igor Frank, MD, has been named a 2014 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Frank is an Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Practice in the Department of Urology at the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Frank began his medical training at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and completed his urology residency followed by a fellowship in urologic oncology at Mayo Clinic and advanced laparoscopy at Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Frank specializes in urologic oncology and robotic surgery. His academic accomplishments include more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and multiple presentations at national and international meetings.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Frank will attend the JUA Annual Meeting in Kobe, Japan. Prior to the conference, Dr. Frank will visit Kitasato University, Tokyo, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

2014 AUA/EAU Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Brant Inman, MD, has been named a 2014 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Inman is an Associate Professor and Vice Chief of Urology at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Inman received his medical degree from University of Alberta, and completed his residency at Laval University, Québec, Canada. Dr. Inman's clinical practice is primarily focused on the management of tumors of the bladder and upper urinary tracts but also includes the management of testicular, penile, and renal tumors. His clinical research focuses on the development of diagnostic tests and novel treatments for bladder cancer, and the evaluation of immunotherapies for cancer. In the laboratory, Dr. Inman's interests relate to hyperthermia and heat activated chemotherapy and tumor-related immunosuppression.

As part of the AUA/EAU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Inman will attend the EAU Annual Meeting in Stockholm, Sweden. Andrew Karim Kader, MD, PhD
2014 AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program

Andrew Karim Kader, MD, PhD, has been named a 2014 AUA/Urological Society of India (USI) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Kader is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center.

Dr. Kader received his medical degree from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver and completed his residency at the University of Toronto followed by an urologic oncology fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Kader holds several patents for genetic discoveries that hold significant promise for early detection and prevention of prostate cancer. He is the principal investigator for numerous clinical research projects and has published extensively. His research interests include genetic markers of risk and outcome in urologic cancer.

As part of the AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Kader will attend the USI Annual Meeting in Delhi, India. Prior to the conference, Dr. Kader will visit the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Dean Lenz, MD

2014 AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Dean Lenz, MD, has been named a 2014 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Lenz is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Urology and Chief of Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Lenz received his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine, and completed his residency in urology at Penn State University followed by a fellowship at Monash University Medical Centre in Melbourne, Australia. Clinically, Dr. Lenz has a special interest in oncology and helped start the robotic surgery program at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Working within the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs, he is the course director for International Health Care Systems. Internationally, Dr. Lenz has done medical work in Kenya, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Lenz will attend the JUA Annual Meeting in Kobe, Japan. Prior to the conference, Dr. Lenz will visit Kagoshima University, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Kentaro Mizuno, MD, has been named a 2014 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Mizuno is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nephro-urology at Nagoya City University Graduates School of Medical Sciences, Nagoya, Japan.

Dr. Mizuno received his medical degree from Nagoya City University, and completed his residency at Nagoya City University Hospital. Dr. Mizuno specializes is pediatric urology. He has completed research on sexual differentiation and testicular development, and his current interests focus on the differentiation process of spermatogonial stem cells.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Mizuno will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Prior to the conference, Dr. Mizuno will visit UT Southwestern, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Arabind Panda, MD

Arabind Panda, MD, has been named a 2014 AUA/Indian American Urological Association (IAUA) Chakrobortty Fellow. Dr. Panda is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urology at the Christian Medical College, Vellore.

Dr. Panda received his medical degrees from the SCB Medical College, Cuttack and the Post graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. He then completed his urology residency at Jawaharlal Institute of Medical Education and Research, Pondicherry. His special interest area is reconstructive urology and his research has focused on reconstructive urology, andrology and benign hyperplasia of the prostate. For the past two years, Dr. Panda has also been an Assistant Editor of the Indian Journal of Urology.

As part of the AUA/IAUA Chakrobortty Fellowship, Dr. Panda will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Prior to the conference, Dr. Panda will visit Wake Forest, UT Southwestern and Eastern Virginia, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Jay Shah, MD

Jay Shah, MD
2014 AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program

Jay Shah, MD, has been named a 2014 AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Shah is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Dr. Shah received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College and his medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his urology residency training at Columbia University Medical Center and his urologic oncology fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He joined the faculty of the MDACC department of Urology in 2010. His clinical practice is focused on all urologic malignancies with an emphasis on bladder cancer and robotic surgery. His academic interest is in clinical outcomes and comparative effectiveness research in bladder cancer. His research is currently focused on defining comprehensive pathways to optimize outcomes after radical cystectomy. Dr. Shah is also currently enrolled in the Masters in Clinical Research Program at UT-Houston Medical School.

As part of the AUA/USI Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Shah will attend the USI Annual Meeting in Delhi, India. Yuan Shao, MD, PhD, has been named a 2014 AUA/Chinese Urological Association (CUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Shao is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urology at Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai, China.

Dr. Shao received his medical degree from Shanghai Jiao-tong University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Ruijin Hospital. Dr. Shao specializes in urodynamics (including management of urinary incontinence and interstitial cystitis), endoscopic therapy of urinary stone diseases, and prostate diseases.

As part of the AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Shao will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Masaki Shiota, MD, PhD, has been named a 2014 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Shiota is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology at Kyushu University, Japan.

Dr. Shiota received his medical degree and completed his urologic residency at Kyushu University, Japan. After receiving his PhD degree from Kyushu University, Dr. Shiota then completed basic research on prostate cancer at Vancouver Prostate Centre from 2010-2012. His main research and practice interest is urological oncology, specifically prostate cancer.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Shiota will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Prior to the conference, Dr. Shiota will visit Mt. Sinai School of Medicine where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

John Stoffel, MD, has been named a 2014 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Stoffel is the Director of the Ambulatory Care Unit and Service Chief for the Department of Urology at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Stoffel received his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at the Lahey Clinic. Dr. Stoffel has completed research in the outcomes of urinary incontinence treatments, methods of treating neurogenic bladder symptoms, and male pelvic pain. He previously chaired the AUA's Young Urologist Committee and is not a member of the AUA Practice Guidelines Committee.

As part of the AUA/EAU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Stoffel will attend the EAU Annual Meeting in Stockholm, Sweden. Marcelo Ignacio Villalta Vargas, MD, has been named a 2014 AUA South American Visiting Scholar. Dr. Villalta is a urologic surgeon at the Hospital Católico Selene Maiani.

Dr. Villalta received his medical degree from San Francisco Xavier University, Bolivia, and completed his residency at the Hospital Caja Nacional de Salud, Bolivia. Dr. Villalta specializes in pediatric urology and wishes to focus on continuing to develop his skills within his specialty.

As part of the AUA South American Visiting Scholar Program, Dr. Villalta will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Prior to the conference, Dr. Villalta will visit Hasbro Children's Hospital, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Zheng Zhang, MD, has been named a 2014 AUA/Chinese Urological Association (CUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Zhang is an Associate Professor of Urology at Peking University First Hospital, Beijing, China.

Dr. Zhang received his medical degree and completed his residency from Peking University Health Science Center. Dr. Zhang specializes in clinical and basic research on bladder cancer, renal cancer and prostate cancer and practices skillful laparoscopic surgery for benign and malignant urological disease, such as LS, NSS, and LS RP.

As part of the AUA/CUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Zhang will attend the AUA Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.
