The recently formed Global Philanthropic Committee (GPC) consists of multi-national urology organizations, including the AUA, with the goal of supporting proposals for worthy projects throughout the world. The GPC allows organizations to pool their resources to fund larger scale philanthropic projects as a collaborative effort. Urology organizations can support a project through monetary funds and/or in-kind donations, including volunteer time.
The inaugural project supported by the GPC is the creation of two regional, urology training centers in sub-Saharan Africa that will serve multiple countries. One center will be in Ibadan, Nigeria and the other in Dakar, Senegal. A formal proposal submitted by the Pan African Urological Surgeon's Association (PAUSA) was approved by the GPC in May 2011 and the project official began on January 1, 2012.
In order to build training capacity, the project will require urologists to donate their time to educate local urologists on a variety of subject areas.
