Research Grants Toolbox

Here are some helpful tools to assist biomedical investigators, especially new ones, plan, write and apply for the basic NIH research project grant, the R01. Some of these tools are provided by The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health (www.niaid.nih.gov).

NIH Resources for New Investigators
The Office of Extramural Research (OER) has established a new web site that articulates NIH's continuing commitment to new investigators. The site describes current policies, data related to the influx of new investigators, resources that new investigators can use to understand and work with the NIH and helpful hints that might be useful in constructing a first application for NIH support.

Example of a Well Written NIH Grant Application
This wonderful tool is Dr. Mark Smeltzer’s basic science (R01) grant application submitted in 1998. The application has been annotated with advice from staff scientists of the Allergy and Infectious Disease Institute of NIH and had been updated to reflect the 2001 PHS 398 guidelines.

Please note that the application is copyrighted. It may be used for non-profit educational purposes provided the document remains unchanged and both Dr. Smeltzer and NIAID are credited.

Urologic Diseases in America
"Urologic Diseases in America" is a report on the prevalence, incidence, treatment and economic impact of urologic disease in the United States by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). This interim presentation covers urolithiasis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, urinary incontinence, urinary tract infection and sexually transmitted diseases. You can view and download the interim compendium report at http://kidney.niddk.nih.gov/statistics/uda/. The full report will include pre-natal hydronephrosis, male reproductive health, urethral diseases, interstitial cystitis, chronic prostatitis and cancers of the prostate, bladder, kidney and testis.

HHMI Lab Management Publication
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Graduate Science Education and Medical Research Training Program has provided a lab management publication Making the Right Moves: A Practical Guide to Scientific Management for Postdocs and New Faculty. The publication is available at http://www.hhmi.org/grants/office/graduate/lab_book.html and can be downloaded in .pdf format.
