At its February 2011 meeting, the American Urological Association’s (AUA’s) Board of Directors approved a white paper for reprocessing flexible cystoscopes. This document was created in tandem with the Society for Urologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA) under the leadership of J. Quentin Clemens, MD, MPH, chair of AUA’s Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee.
This white paper is a comprehensive summary of existing recommendations, and aims to provide the minimum steps necessary for properly reprocessing the flexible cystoscope. The steps include, but are not limited to, pre-cleaning, leak testing, cleaning, disinfection, rinsing, drying and storage. The disinfection process also identifies common disinfectants, such as glutaraldehyde, and the suggested methods for using these products.
Prior to the creation of the white paper, few guidelines or standards for the process existed. Those which were in place, authored by federal bodies, manufacturers and professional societies, were conflicting and led to confusion by those who wanted to implement proper procedures and optimize patient safety. Therefore, the AUA and SUNA worked together to create an overview of available recommendations and to identify disinfecting techniques that are unique to the cystoscope View the white paper:
