As urologic procedures continue to migrate from the inpatient to the office setting, office-based surgery assumes greater importance, particularly with respect to patient safety. Numerous states have issued regulations establishing guidelines for surgery in the office setting; however, not every state has such specific protocols.
Users can access state guidance on such issues as infection control, structural recommendations, directive standards for all levels of office surgery and anesthesia, as well as office accreditation as executed by the governing state medical board.
American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Anesthesia standards and guidelines
Many of the state regulations, as well as the American College of Surgeons Guidelines, require adherence to standards/guidelines established by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). Click here to review these standards and guidelines by the ASA.
Accreditation Organizations for Office-based Surgery
Some of the state regulations require that office-based surgery facilities be accredited through an outside organization. There are three outside organizations: Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc., in addition to Medicare that will be able to provide assistance in the accreditation process and may be specifically designated as the official accrediting body in the regulations. Click here for contact information for these organizations.
