FDA Announces New Alerts on Supplements

In addition to the alerts announced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) late last month which were reported recently in the Health Policy Brief, the FDA last week issued several new announcements regarding the following sexual enhancement supplements: Ninja Mojo, Love Rider, and AFFIRM XL. All three were noted as containing hidden drug ingredients. Ninja Mojo and Love Rider contain tadalafil, the active ingredient in the FDA-approved prescription drug Cialis. AFFIRM XL contains sulfoaildenafil, which is structurally similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra. These undeclared ingredients may interact negatively with other drugs especially nitrates.

The AUA urges its members to alert patients about the harms of these supplements. Patients should be advised to discard unused supplements and to contact the FDA if they experience adverse events or side effects.
