research
The mission of the AUA Office of Research is to increase and maintain the urology physician-scientist and researcher workforce to catalyze the advancement of clinical practice and reduce the burden of urologic disease.
In a year like no other, we remained committed and steadfast to our research community.
Provided nearly $1.5 million in research funding:

5 Rising Stars in Urology Research Awards
50 Research Scholar Awards
8 Residency Research Awards
15 Summer Medical Student Fellowships

Partnered with the Society for Urologic Research to establish the first Urology Care Foundation Research Scholar Award dedicated to supporting women and under represented minorities in urologic research.
Included the first-ever international speakers from Italy, Spain and Mexico in the annual Early Career Investigators Showcase.
Partnered with Nathirmal N. Lalchandani, MD to create a new endowment to support medical student research.
Held the 8th Annual Early-Career Investigators Workshop as a virtual meeting and marked its highest-ever number of participants – 42 future urology research grant winners.
Made major adjustments to the Urology Care Foundation Research Scholar Award competition timeline to help accommodate researchers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
advocacy
The AUA is the leading advocate in the area of urology. We work on behalf of our members and their patients to ensure critical interests are promoted to a wide array of decision makers. Whether contacting lawmakers on Capitol Hill or federal officials in government agencies, our sole purpose is dedicated to the practice of urology and urological health.
In a year like no other, our advocacy community continued to work for you.
Held 274 virtual meetings with members of Congress that ultimately contributed to the House passing the Veteran's Prostate Cancer Treatment and Research Act (H.R. 6092), which would establish a viable clinical pathway for prostate cancer within the Department of Veteran’s Affairs for those men who selflessly served this nation in uniform.
Worked with U.S. legislators to introduce H.R. 5924, which would create a student loan forgiveness program for specialty physicians, such as urologists, who practice in a rural area. If enacted, the bill would improve access to essential health services for many Americans by helping to increase the number of practicing specialty physicians in less populated regions of the country.
The American Urological Association, Inc. Political Action Committee (AUAPAC) supported a dozen federal candidates.
Partnered with ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer and the Maryland State Medical Society (MedChi) to enact H.B. 852 specifically requiring the state of Maryland to cover a digital rectal exam and a PSA test for men between 40 and 75 years of age, as well as men who are at high risk for developing the disease.
Successfully transitioned the 2020 Annual Urology Advocacy Summit to a virtual platform, and saw the highest number of registrants to date with more than 300 attendees, including 81 medical students, residents, fellows and young urologists. The agenda featured numerous COVID-19-related topics including a session entitled Prostate Cancer Disparities: The Pandemic's Impact on the African American Community and the Role of Urology.
Created and maintained telemedicine information on the AUA COVID-19 Resource Center for our members.
As part of the AUA Summit, met with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology to discuss burden reduction, integration of prior authorization and improving interoperability.
Met virtually with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Office of Burden Reduction Director, Dr. Mary Greene to address concerns with prior authorization and step therapy protocols.
Met virtually with the CMS’ Hospital and Ambulatory Policy Group Division of Practitioner Services in advance of submitting final comments on the proposed Calendar Year 2021 Medicare Physician Fee schedule. The discussion focused on proposed policies for telehealth, evaluation and management services, and valuation of specific urology services.
Sent a letter to the Biden Transition Team introducing the AUA as a resource and partner on health care related issues and inequalities. The letter advocated for greater research funding, expanded telehealth access and a reduction on the use of prior authorization.
Submitted feedback to National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases’ (NIDDK) strategic plan.
Advocated to place a urologist-scientist on the NIDDK Strategic Plan Workgroup. The Research Advocacy Committee recommended Dr. Hunter Wessells, who accepted offer from NIDDK.
Welcomed NIH Agencies to the Bladder Health Alliance Roundtable Meeting where they highlighted bladder health research taking place within the organization.
Strengthened urologic research advocacy efforts through strike force meetings with leaders at four NIH agencies (National Cancer Institute, National Institute on Aging, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke).
Launched the Prostate Cancer Impact Alliance. The AUA-led coalition has grown to more than 30 members including patient, physician and research advocacy organizations.
global outreach
INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS
More than 100 AUA faculty participated in over 45 national and multi-national society programs across more than 20 countries. These programs were stand-alone events or were held in conjunction with one of our partner’s Annual Congresses.
In a year like no other the AUA’s determination to provide quality outreach and education to urologists around the globe persists. We were honored to participate in the Urological Society of India’s (USI) Lessons in Urology course for trainees in India. We have held this course every year since 2008 and it has served hundreds of urology residents for more than a decade.
We had the opportunity to participate in the Urological Association of Asia’s Annual Congress, which was be held in conjunction with the Korean Urological Association’s Annual Congress. We provided pre-recorded state of the art lectures for both virtual meetings in addition to the Asian Urology Residents Course, which is designed to teach trainees in the region.
Additionally, we were delighted to participate in several virtual congresses including the national urologic meetings in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and the multinational meeting of Confederación Americana de Urología (CAU).
ACADEMIC EXCHANGE PROGRAMS
We established a new visiting scholar program with France (l'Association Française d'Urologie) for 2021 and we are in our fourth year of a program with Germany (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Urologie). Our Academic Exchange Programs allow young academic urologists to benefit from the sharing of knowledge and experiences with colleagues around the world. The programs include a 2-4 week educational experience at an academic center, and attendance at an international urology meeting. During the exchange, the participants observe urologic surgeries/procedures, attend clinics, present lectures and take part in staff activities. These programs foster a closer alliance between the AUA and our international partners, and assist in identifying future leaders within the global urologic community.

aua clinical guidelines
Due to the pandemic, we had to explore new ways to engage both with our membership and with our panel members in the development of each of our AUA Clinical Guidelines. While much of our standard activity revolves around in-person interactions for developing Guidelines, we were able to successfully transition our interactions and meetings to a virtual environment to finalize new Clinical Guidelines and Guideline amendments.
The guidelines page on AUAnet.org received an average of 16,000 screen views per month; 11,000 of those were unique views.

Four new guidelines were published:

Advanced Prostate Cancer
Disorders of Ejaculation
Microhematuria
Male Infertility

Published amendments to:

Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer
Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer
Surgical Management of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Urotrauma

Financial perspective
Annual Meeting is the largest single activity for the AUA from both a programmatic perspective, as well as financial, and the meeting typically provides more than one third of total revenue for the year. The unexpected loss of a significant portion of revenue required the AUA to quickly analyze the overall budget and cash flows for the year. When it was evident COVID-19 restrictions would require the cancellation of the Annual Meeting as well as many other activities, AUA leadership and staff quickly sought new funding opportunities and immediately implemented cost-saving measures where possible.

Due to sound long term strategy and planning combined with organizational agility and discipline, the AUA avoided negative financial impact and remains a financially strong and healthy organization prepared to continue our mission and serve the urologic community as we have done for 118 years.
