Young Urologist of the Year Award Winners

Established by the 2012-2013 AUA Young Urologists Committee (YUC) Chair, Dr. Michael C. Ost, the Young Urologist of the Year Award is presented annually to select AUA members who have been in practice for ten years or less in recognition of their efforts and commitment to advancing the development of fellow early-career urologists. The following members were selected by their colleagues, who serve on the Young Urologists Committee, to receive this special honor for 2020.

Suzanne B. Merrill, MD

Suzanne B. Merrill, MD
Mid-Atlantic Section

Penn State University

In recognition of her leadership of Penn State’s residency program and her mentorship to junior faculty as it relates to professional development and work-life balance. Dr. Merrill serves as faculty educator and mentor for the AUA oral board course and is actively researching graduate education related to surgical technique.

Peter Steinberg, MD

Peter Steinberg, MD
New England Section

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

For his efforts in advancing both resident and young urologist programming at New England Sectional meetings. Dr. Steinberg developed the Section’s resident jeopardy competition in 2014 and presented two lectures on financial wellness to young urologists and residents at the Section’s 2019 meeting.

For her valuable contributions as the North Central Section’s alternate representative to the AUA Public Policy Council and the former Minnesota representative to the Section’s Young Urologists Committee. Dr. Granberg will serve as the Section’s Public Policy Council representative beginning in June 2020.

For his service to the Northeastern Section’s Program Committee and his plenary presentation at the 2019 NSAUA Annual Meeting. Dr. Hamilton will serve as the Scientific Co-Chair for the NSAUA 2020 Annual Meeting.

John Musser, LTC, MD

Tripler Army Medical Center

For his service as the Co-Director of the SGSU’s 2019 Kimbrough Seminar as well as demonstrated leadership in clinical, educational and humanitarian domains. Recently, Dr. Musser led humanitarian missions to the Republic of Palau, Bangladesh and the Federated States of Micronesia. He is currently assessing plans for a humanitarian trip to the island state of Yap.

Angela Smith, MD

University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

In recognition of her mentorship both in her role as Director of Urologic Oncology in the UNC Department of Urology as well as in her role as a board member of the Society of Women in Urology. Dr. Smith also serves as an Assistant Secretary for the AUA, overseeing AUA’s partnerships in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Naval Medical Center San Diego

In recognition of his commitment to furthering the education and development of residents and young urologists as the Naval Medical Center San Diego’s Chair of Urology as well as his active involvement in both the Western Section and national AUA. Dr. Stroup perviously served as the SGSU representative to the AUA’s Young Urologists Committee as well as Chair of the Committee.

For his outstanding efforts and achievements as the Program Director at Weill Cornell Medical College and the founding faculty member of the Executive MBA/MS Healthcare Leadership program offered there. Dr. Lee will serve as the Section’s Scientific Program Co-Chair for the 2020 Meeting.

Elizabeth Malm-Buatsi, MD

South Central Section

University of Missouri

For her efforts and commitment to advancing workforce diversity and mentorship and her active involvement in the South Central Section and specialty societies. Dr. Malm-Buatsi presented research findings and led a panel discussion on the topic of diversity in pediatric urology at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Societies for Pediatric Urology.
