Transrectal Ultrasound of the Prostate Online CME Instructions

Overview/Statement of Need

The Urologist is uniquely qualified by training and experience to perform and interpret transrectal ultrasound of the prostate (TRUS). TRUS performed by the Urologist enhances patient care by providing a minimally invasive procedure that gives real-time information for a rapid and accurate diagnosis. Urologists desire to maintain their high degree of proficiency in performing, interpreting and documenting this imaging study. This video re-enforces the concepts and techniques required to perform high-quality transrectal ultrasound examinations of the prostate.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this activity, the participants should be able to:

  • Identify the normal transrectal ultrasound appearance of the prostate
  • Describe the protocols and technique for transrectal ultrasound of the prostate
  • Discuss the common indications for transrectal ultrasound of the prostate
  • Appraise the ultrasound appearance of common pathology of the prostate
  • Demonstrate the basic transrectal ultrasound examination of the prostate, including documentation and patient safety
  • Outline the role of ultrasound imaging during prostate biopsy
