  • Agent: herpes simplex virus, type 2.
  • Clinical: pain, itching, ulcers, urethral discharge, dysuria, and tender lymphadenopathy.
  • Transmission: sexual.
  • Histology:
    • Vesicles with multinucleated giant cells containing intranuclear inclusions surrounded by clear halos (image A) & (image B).
    • Tzanck prep highlights these viral-laden cells.
  • Treatment: acyclovir eases the symptoms and decreases the duration of recurrences, but there is no cure.
