- Agent: herpes simplex virus, type 2.
- Clinical: pain, itching, ulcers, urethral discharge, dysuria, and tender lymphadenopathy.
- Transmission: sexual.
- Vesicles with multinucleated giant cells containing intranuclear inclusions surrounded by clear halos (image A) & (image B).
- Tzanck prep highlights these viral-laden cells.
- Treatment: acyclovir eases the symptoms and decreases the duration of recurrences, but there is no cure.
