Our Promise

Mission

Our mission is to promote the highest standards

of urological clinical care through education,

research and the formulation of health care policy.

Letter

From The President

I am proud to bring you the American Urological Association’s (AUA) 2016 Annual Report. The year was one of growth for the organization! Our Annual Meeting remains the Gold Standard for education and we continued to make headway in the three pillars of our mission statement: educational outreach, investments in research and advocating for the profession on the regulatory and legislative fronts. Through our numerous initiatives and with the support of our member volunteers and dedicated staff, the AUA continues to be a vital channel for transforming and advancing the field of urology.

This publication takes a look at the AUA legacy and our commitment to the community over the last 100+ years. It showcases our diverse and dynamic membership and highlights the ways we advanced urology in 2016. It also provides a snapshot of our financial position, leadership and key partners.

On behalf of the Board, I want to thank our members for their continued trust and support. It is because of our members that we have the strength, expertise and passion to continue to shape and advance the field of urology.

Richard K. Babayan, MD

President, 5/11/2016 – 5/16/2017

Founded in 1902 by eight New York genitourinary surgeons, the AUA has grown to represent more than 22,000 members in over 100 countries. As the oldest urological association in the world, our work has touched every area of urology in every corner of the globe.

In the early days, the AUA was an association that largely catered to practicing urologists; however, over the years, it has evolved into what it is today — a developed and diverse organization that encompasses the complete spectrum of the urologic community — from researchers and academicians to clinicians and residents, from medical students to practice managers, domestic doctors to those working across the globe and the entire allied professional care team.

Through our many educational programs, the Journal of Urology®, AUAUniversity and our Annual Meetings, the AUA provides continuing education to more urologists and urologic health care professionals than any other association in the world.

Additionally, our Guidelines, Best Practice Statements and other clinical guidance documents define the industry’s standard of care for diagnosing, treating and managing urologic conditions and disease.

Being a member of the AUA brings you a broad spectrum of benefits. It’s not only the annual meeting or the subscription to the Journal of Urology. It’s also the other educational opportunities that the association offers throughout the year.

- Riccardo Autorino, MD, PhD  |  Associate Professor of Urology

Dr. Hans Arora, AUA Holtgrewe Fellow (2016-2017), and U.S. Congressman Patrick Tiberi (OH-12), Capitol Hill

As the leading advocate for the specialty of urology, the AUA works hard to safeguard our patients and our practices. It is through our advocacy efforts that we have been able to guarantee that the voice of urology and our patients is heard at the legislative and regulatory levels. From preserving appropriate payments for physician services to halting non-PSA screening measures, we have helped to ensure the best possible care for urology patients and defend urologists’ rights.

We fundamentally believe that a large part of our association’s responsibility is to give back to the urologic community. In 1987, the AUA established its official foundation, now known as the Urology Care Foundation. The Foundation is committed to advancing urology research and patient education.

Even before establishing the Foundation, the AUA was committed to supporting research. Since 1975, we’ve funded more than $30 million in research dollars to help the brightest minds conduct the best urology research - investigations that have led to better care, treatments and an improved quality of life for millions of people around the world.

The Urology Residency Match Program (a.k.a Urology Match) is a critical part to ensuring the best thinkers in medicine find their place in the urologic community. The AUA has administered the Urology Match on behalf of the Society of Academic Urologists (SAU)* for more than 30 years and during the last decade, has expanded its services into other fellowship matches including pediatrics, urologic oncology, andrology, endourology and genitourinary reconstructive surgery.

We are proud of the role we play in making dreams come true for the best and brightest medical students and residents.

*At the recent 2016 AUA Annual Meeting, the membership of both the Society of University Urologists and the Society of Urology Chairpersons and Program Directors voted to approve the formation of the Society of Academic Urologists (SAU).

Core to who we are is developing and honoring the leaders among us. The AUA Leadership Program, designed to identify and develop leadership talent among young urologists, has graduated 127 urologists since its inception in 2004. These Leadership Program graduates have gone on to shape the course of the profession. Through our recognition programs such as the Gold Cystoscope and the Ramon Guiteras awards, among others, we have honored more than 374 members of our community since 1963 for their outstanding contributions.

“Advancing Urology” is our tagline, and we achieve this through the expansion of traditional offerings and the forging of new ground. The AUA is the pioneer of the first, global urologic census and the creator of AQUA, the first complete and comprehensive national urologic registry. Both of these endeavors are innovative programs that will help steer the future of urology.

The caliber of our work – our outstanding education, steadfast commitment to research and passion for advocating on behalf of our members and their patients - combined with the breadth and depth of our work make us the leader in what we do.

We are honored by the trust that the global urologic community has placed in us. Our staff and volunteers work diligently to ensure we remain an organization that you are proud of; one that brings continued value to our community. We strive to ignite passion, purpose and direction to advance the field of urology for years to come.

Advancing Urology

With more than 22,000 members from 107 countries, we are proud to be the largest urologic member organization in the world—and even prouder of our member satisfaction rates, which continue to grow year after year.

Our commitment to our members is unwavering.

Our Members

The AUA is committed to supporting urologic research through funding, advocacy and scholarly exchange. The AUA is a leader in helping to identify gaps in knowledge and communicating urology research needs to key constituents at the federal level. The AUA’s Research Scholar Award Program has provided support to young urology researchers for more than 40 years, and the AUA—through its Annual Meeting and other educational offerings—provides the global urology community opportunities to present, learn and share news of discovery and advancement in research.

In this regard, 2016 was an exceptional year.

Advancing Urology Through Research

When I joined the AUA early in my career, the AUA annual meeting, in particular, was the platform for a lot of my research as a Fellow and really started that whole process of being able to network with colleagues on a very large scale.
