Advocacy
Worked with legislators to reintroduce federal legislation to address rural workforce shortages in urology and other specialties (H.R. 944).
Worked with legislators to reintroduce federal legislation to establish a clinical pathway for prostate cancer care within the Veterans Health Administration (H.R. 944/S. 2720, the Veterans’ Prostate Cancer Treatment and Research Act).
Hosted Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) virtual briefing for Congressional staff, which included researchers, AUA Office of Research, and patient advocates.
Rebranded our two new AUA-led patient alliances, the Prostate Cancer Impact Alliance and the Kidney Cancer Impact Alliance.
Successfully contributed to National Cancer Institute (NCI) Request For Information (RFI) about lowering percent effort requirements for K08 awards. NCI made the change from 75% to 50% effort permanent and thanked the AUA for our feedback.
AUAPAC supported 17 total candidates that care about the policy issues critical to urologic specialists and the patients they serve (eight republicans and nine democrats).

AUA Annual Meeting

COVID continued to impact the AUA’s Annual Meeting in 2021, and the organization transitioned its live meeting to a virtual event in the span of three weeks. Despite the late change of plans, the organization produced an extraordinary virtual experience, bringing the very latest advancements of our specialty to all corners of the globe. Attendees represented all 50 States PLUS 92 countries around the world.

Research

Provided over $1.4 million in research funding.

Established the Leadership in Education, Achievement and Diversity (LEAD) Program in partnership with Urovant Sciences, Inc., to support the development of successful research careers for urology residents from racial and ethnic backgrounds underrepresented in urologic research.

Introduced new awards in partnership with Merck & Co. to support residents from racial and ethnic backgrounds underrepresented in urologic research to become physician-scientists.

Created new summer fellowships in partnership with several AUA Sections to support medical students from racial and ethnic backgrounds underrepresented in urologic research.

Held the inaugural Methods in Clinical Urology Research (MCURe) Workshop in partnership with Duke Clinical Research Training Program which emphasized research education and mentorship toward increasing the participation of community-based and academic urologists in urology clinical trials.

AQUA

The AUA Quality Registry (AQUA) was approved by CMS as a Qualified Clinical Data Registry (QCDR) for the 2021 MIPS reporting year.

AQUA now includes more than 50 physician performance measures, including 16 measures that are urology-relevant.

AUA launched a collaboration with IntrinsiQ Specialty Solutions (IQSS), an EHR company, resulting in 100+ new practices with approximately 700 providers joining the AQUA Registry.

AQUA now includes 7.9 million unique patients in the AQUA Registry with various urologic conditions and more than 51 million patient encounters.

Published the eighth AUA Census report on U.S. urologists, The State of Urology Workforce and Practice in the United States.

Published the first Special 2020 AUA Census Report: Domestic Practicing Urologist Members by AUA Section.

Published four articles on peer-reviewed journals on the topics around evaluating quality improvement and patient safety amongst practicing urologists; professional burnout, career choice regret, and unmet needs for well-being among urology residents; the gender pay gap in urology; and the impact of COVID-19 on the volume of urologic care.

Completed analysis for a major clinical study on overactive bladder and four clinical trial studies for industry partners using data from the AQUA Registry and other patient databases.

Launched digital medical history newsletter, The Scope of Urology. Since January 2021, the newsletter has garnered more than 14,700 page views!
Added a Virtual Tour to the William P. Didusch Center for Urologic History website for visits during the pandemic AND hosted over 70 new staff, urology-care providers and vendors for in-person (masked and distanced) tours of the museum.
The AUA Earl Nation Retrospectroscope Award was presented to Dr. Adam Russon at University at Buffalo for his paper and presentation at the AUA2021 Virtual History Forum: VD and the Battlefield: America's First Cultural Export to Military Brothels.
Publications

At the end of 2021, Dr. Joseph A. Smith, Jr. completed his tenure as Editor of The Journal of Urology®. As the leader of The Journal, he innovated in countless important ways, including the introduction of open peer review, an Open Access publication option, and publishing content that earned The Journal of Urology® its highest Journal Impact Factor to date: 7.45, a 26% increase from 2020.

Urology Practice® published 105 articles, the most in the history of the publication.

Our dedicated volunteer peer reviewers completed 3,757 total reviews in 2021 (3,328 for The Journal of Urology® and 429 for Urology Practice®).

The AUA’s scholarly journals boast the most citations and the largest number of social media followers in all of urology.

AUANews published its first ever “Celebrating Diversity with the AUA” focus issue in April 2021.

In September 2021, the Board of Directors approved the launch of JU Open Plus, a peer-reviewed Gold Open Access journal that will launch in January 2023.

Quality & Measurement

Launched E-QIPS, a repository of community-sourced, peer reviewed, descriptions of urologic-specific quality improvement projects.

Convened two Webinars as part of a QI Summit series on primary palliative care in urology.

Released Steps to Success: Improving Advanced Prostate Cancer Patient Management and Care Coordination Toolkit.

Drafted a primer on measurement science that is tailored for urologists.

Developed a conceptual measurement framework for urology.

Developed the 2021 MIPS Toolkit.





Urology Care Foundation

Patient Education

The Urology Care Foundation continues to grow as the single largest repository in the world for urologic patient education aligned with current AUA clinical guidelines. This year we expanded the number, type, and the reach of our patient education materials by:

170+ patient education resources developed, updated, or translated, aimed at reaching those facing urologic cancers and conditions.

Reaching record-breaking numbers of 10 million+ visitors to the website, UrologyHealth.org.

Translating 100+ patient education pieces and expanding language offerings to include Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Punjabi, Spanish and Urdu.

Humanitarian Support

We’re on a global mission!

The Urology Care Foundation is committed to being the leader in improving health care for urologic patients worldwide through our humanitarian efforts. To support this global mission, the Urology Care Foundation established a series of Humanitarian Endowments, which provide funding for urologic medical missions and humanitarian efforts.
