The AUA's Academic Exchange Programs provide promising young urologists the opportunity to gain a global perspective in urology while broadening their cultural horizons. These reciprocal programs include a 2-4 week educational experience at an academic institution(s) and attendance at the national society's annual meeting. During the exchange, participants observe urologic surgeries/procedures, attend clinics, present lectures and take part in staff activities. The exchanges are "observation only" – participants do not perform hands-on surgery.

The AUA offers academic two-way exchange programs with the following countries/regions:

• Brazil
• Europe
• IAUA/Chakrobortty
• Japan
• USI

Exchange participants are selected through a competitive application process (application deadlines and eligibility requirements vary by program). Interested faculty must submit an online application and supporting documentation. Each application is then reviewed by the appropriate selection committee. Applicants are scored and ranked on a number of criteria that includes, but may not be limited to, the following:

• Commitment to academic urology, including fellowships and/or scholarships during residency or post-residency
• Research productivity (clinical or laboratory), including grants received, commitment to laboratory investigation, current research in progress and current research program
• Achievements in and commitment to clinical urology
• Record of publications, peer reviewed and other
• Commitment and contributions to the AUA (at national and/or Section level) – papers presented, program chairmanships, postgraduate or other courses taught and committee service
• Strength and relevance of candidate's personal statement
• Strength and enthusiasm of letter of support from program chair
