Daniel A. Barocas, MD, MPH, FACS
Southeastern Section
Daniel A. Barocas, MD, is a fellowship-trained urologic oncologist, with expertise in open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery for genitourinary cancers. He is also a health-services researcher with interests in quality measurement, quality improvement/patient safety and comparative effectiveness of treatments for urologic cancers. Dr. Barocas is a research mentor for numerous junior faculty, fellows, residents and students, and is helping to redesign and teach the second-year medical student research course. He serves as the inpatient medical director for the urology unit; on high-level committees within the hospital, such as a committee to redesign healthcare delivery, with a focus on population health, within the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network. In addition, Dr. Barocas is involved in national service as an Assistant Editor for The Journal of Urology®.
Darren Beiko, MD, MBA, FRCSC

Dr. Darren Beiko is an Associate Professor of Urology at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. He received his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Ottawa. He completed urology residency at Queen's University, followed by a 2-year fellowship in endourology and laparoscopic urology at the University of Western Ontario in London. Dr. Beiko recently completed an executive MBA. He has more than 50 peer-reviewed publications. His clinical focus is endourology and his research focus is PCNL and business-related themes in healthcare including leadership and marketing. Dr. Beiko chairs the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination Surgery Test Committee and sits on the Urology Examination Board and Test Committee at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Peter Black, MD
Western Section
Dr. Peter Black is a Urologic Oncologist at Vancouver General Hospital, a Research Scientist at the Vancouver Prostate Centre, and an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He received his undergraduate degree from the UBC and his medical degree from Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. He completed his urologic training at the University of Washington in Seattle and fellowship in urologic oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He has a clinical subspecialty interest in bladder cancer and also a translational research program in urothelial carcinoma. This research focuses on the integration of advanced biomarkers and novel targeted therapies to promote precision oncology and is supported by peer-reviewed grant funding. Dr. Black has 100 publications in both clinical and translational research domains.
Robert I. Carey, MD, PhD, FACS

Dr. Robert I. Carey is currently a clinical associate professor at the Florida State University College of Medicine. He received his medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia. His residency training in surgery and urology, and his fellowship in robotic surgery, laparoscopy, and endourology were completed at the University of Miami.
Dr. Carey earned his PhD in Chemistry from MIT. He was awarded an NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship at Harvard University, a DAAD fellowship at the Free University in West Berlin, and he served as an assistant professor at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. Dr. Carey is a co-author of the book Conquer Prostate Cancer: How Medicine, Faith, Love and Sex Can Renew Your Life.
John W. Davis, MD, FACS
South Central Section
Dr. John W. Davis is an associate professor of urology and director of the prostate cancer surgery program at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Previously, he was an assistant professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School. His recent leadership roles include AUA committees, immediate past president of the Society of Urological Robotic Surgeons, and Associate Editor for the British Journal of Urology International.
He received a degree in biology (Cum Laude) from Davidson College, and his MD from the University of Virginia. After urology residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School, he completed fellowships in the basic sciences as an American Foundation of Urologic Disease Fellow, as a clinical fellow in urologic oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center, and in laparoscopic surgery at Charité Hospital in Germany.
William Robert DeFoor, Jr., MD, MPH, FAAP
North Central Section
Dr. William Robert DeFoor is an Associate Professor of Pediatric Urology at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Director of the Pediatric Urology Fellowship Program. Dr. DeFoor received his undergraduate degree at Georgia Tech and medical degree from the University of Kentucky. His urologic residency at the Medical University of South Carolina was followed by a pediatric urology fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Dr. DeFoor completed a Masters in Public Health at Harvard University in 2005 and serves as the Director of Clinical Research for the Division of Pediatric Urology. He has co-authored over 75 peer-reviewed journal articles, editorials, and book chapters. Dr. DeFoor has been the Secretary-treasurer for the American Association of Pediatric Urologists since 2010 and is currently the President-elect for 2015 – 16.
Ithaar H. Derweesh, MD
2016 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar
Ithaar Derweesh, MD, has been named a 2016 AUA/EAU Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Derweesh is a Professor of Surgery in the Department of Urology at the UC San Diego School of Medicine.
Dr. Derweesh received his medical degree from the University of Chicago and completed his residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital and Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Derweesh subspecializes in Urologic Oncology with a focus on Renal Cell Carcinoma. He currently serves as the Program Director for the Urologic Oncology Fellowship at UC San Diego. Dr. Derweesh has more than 130 peer-reviewed publications and serves on the AUA and NCCN Guideline Panels on Kidney Cancer.
As part of the AUA/EAU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Derweesh attended the 2016 EAU Annual Meeting in Munich, Germany. Prior to the conference, Dr. Derweesh visited Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (UK), UZ Leuven (Belgium), University Vita -Salute San Raffaele (Italy), and LMU-Klinikum der Universität München (Germany) where he had the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.
David A. Duchene, MD, FACS
South Central Section
Dr. David A. Duchene is an Associate Professor of Urology at the University of Kansas Medical Center and the Director of Minimally-Invasive Urological Surgery and Kidney Stone Disease. He previously completed urology residency training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and then finished an Endourological Society fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Dr. Duchene is currently the president of the Kansas Urological Society. He also serves as the section editor for “New Technologies in Endourology” Section of the Journal of Endourology. Dr. Duchene has written several peer-reviewed journal articles and text book chapters in the field of urology and serves as a reviewer for multiple publications, including The Journal of Urology®, Urology, and the Journal of Endourology.
Thomas Guzzo, MD, MPH
Mid-Atlantic Section
Dr. Thomas Guzzo is the Vice-Chief of Urology and Associate Program Director of Urology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and a graduate of Temple University School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery internship and urology residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Guzzo completed a fellowship at the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute of the Johns Hopkins Hospital in urologic oncology. During his fellowship he also earned a Master's in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is extensively trained in the treatment of all aspects of urologic malignancies including open, laparoscopic, endoscopic and robotic surgical treatment for such malignancies. He was the recipient of the prestigious Prostate Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award in 2009.
Mitchell R. Humphreys, MD
Western Section
Dr. Mitchell Humphreys received his medical school training at the University of Missouri, and went on to complete residency at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. He completed an Endourology fellowship at Indiana University and Methodist Hospital. Since then he's been a consultant at Mayo Clinic in Arizona where he specializes in surgical and metabolic stone disease, BPH (with a special focus on HoLEP), and minimally invasive GU oncology. As an Associate Professor in Urology, he has provided leadership for the Center for Procedural Innovation and currently serves as the Endourology Fellowship director. He sits on several institutional committees, including some outside of Mayo as a Board of Trustee for Columbia College. He is reviewer for several urology journals, has over 65 peer-reviewed publications and four book chapters.
Kate H. Kraft, MD
North Central Section
Dr. Kate Kraft is assistant professor in the Department of Urology at the University of Michigan Medical School and practices pediatric urology at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor. She received her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and then completed her surgical internship and urology residency at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, followed by a fellowship in pediatric urology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Kraft's clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery and endourology, andrology, and disorders of sex development. She is currently pursuing clinical research in pediatric stone disease, uroradiology, and adolescent varicocele.
Danil V. Makarov, MD, MHS

Dr. Danil V. Makarov is a board-certified urologist and a fellowship-trained health services researcher. He received his undergraduate degree in economics with distinction from Yale where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. His medical degree was completed at Johns Hopkins where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his residency in urology at the Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins, where he continued on as faculty. Dr. Makarov then completed a Masters in Health Sciences Research as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at Yale. Dr. Makarov joined NYU in 2010 as Assistant Professor of Urology, Population Health and Health Policy. He holds a Career Development Award from the VA to study the diffusion of innovation and adoption of guidelines in prostate cancer care.
Vitaly Margulis, MD, FACS

Dr. Vitaly Margulis, Assistant Professor of Urology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin and UT Southwestern Medical School. He trained in the highly competitive urology residency program at UT Southwestern and completed a fellowship in urologic oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where he was previously a Clinical Specialist in Urologic Oncology. He joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2009. Dr. Margulis uses minimally invasive techniques to treat patients with soft-tissue tumors and kidney, prostate, bladder, testicular, penile, and adrenal cancers. His research projects include clinical and lab research focused on the biology of kidney cancer, the genetic changes that occur and cause it to spread, and how to stop it.
Arthur Mourtzinos, MD, MBA
New England Section
Dr. Arthur Mourtzinos completed his residency in General Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and for Urology at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center. He completed a fellowship in male and female pelvic reconstructive surgery and urinary incontinence at UCLA Medical Center. Recently, he completed his studies as an evening student at Babson College where he received an MBA. Dr. Mourtzinos is currently a staff physician at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center and the co-vice chair of the Institute of Urology. He is the Director of the Continence Center at the Institute, an assistant professor of Urology at Tufts Medical School, and a member of the Lahey Clinic Foundation Board of Trustees. In 2012, he was selected to be the Executive Director of the Lahey Clinic Alumni Association.
Alberto J. Ramirez-Lopez, MD, FACS
Southeastern Section
Dr. Ramirez-Lopez completed undergraduate education at Marquette University, and completed his medical degree and residency in Surgery and Urology at the University of Puerto Rico Medical School. He is a founding member of ARV Urology partners and Advanced Urological Institute in Manati, Puerto Rico and currently serves as president of both corporations. He is also the medical director of Northeast corporation, a Urology Ambulatory Surgery center in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico. He has served on the governing board of the Puerto Rico Urological Association and also served as its president. His clinical interests include adult urology, prostate cancer and stone disease. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Urology, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Joseph Renzulli, MD, FACS
New England Section
Dr. Joseph Renzulli is an Assistant Professor of Urology at The Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University. He currently serves as director of the prostate cancer surgery program at The Miriam Hospital and co-director of the Brown Endourology Fellowship. He is the course director for the 3rd and 4th year medical student urology rotation and serves on the Postgraduate Referral Committee. His current research focuses on outcomes in prostate cancer surgery, participation in clinical trials for prostate and bladder cancer and translational research on microvesicle transfer of epigenetic material in prostate cancer through a collaborative effort with the Department of Hematology and Oncology at Brown University. He recently completed a four year term as the Rhode Island representative to the NESAUA and chair of the NESAUA Socioeconomic committee.
Lee Richstone, MD
New York Section
Lee Richstone, MD is System Vice Chairman of Urology for the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. He also serves as Chief of Urology of the North Shore University Hospital, and as Program Director of the Urology Residency.
Dr. Richstone completed his medical school training and residency at the Weill-Cornell University Medical College in New York City. There he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), the national medical honor society. Dr. Richstone's research interests include the development of novel methods to assess surgeon competency for credentialing and resident education. He has been awarded two Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program Grants to pursue this work. His clinical research has focused on pioneering work in Laparoendoscopic Single Site Surgery (LESS), as well as laparoscopic and robotic renal, prostate and bladder surgery.
Aseem Shukla, MD
Mid-Atlantic Section
Dr. Aseem Shukla is Associate Professor of Surgery (in Urology) at the Perleman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and serves as Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Prior to returning to CHOP in 2012, Dr. Shukla served as Director of Urology at University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital and held associate professorships in urology and pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. Additionally, Dr. Shukla served as the Residency Program Director of the University of Minnesota Department of Urology.
Dr. Shukla writes about issues at the intersection of faith, politics and medicine, and has been featured in the Washington Post and New York Times. He co-founded the Hindu American Foundation and serves on its Board of Directors.
Douglas W. Storm, MD
North Central Section
Dr. Douglas W. Storm is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Urology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the Children's Hospital of Iowa. He earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College and completed his residency in urology at Geisinger Medical Center. He went on to a pediatric urology fellowship at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Afterwards he served as the Director of Pediatric Urology at the Naval Medical Center San Diego from 2010-2012. After leaving the Navy, he accepted a faculty position at the University of Iowa.
Dr. Storm's particular areas of research interest include pediatric urinary tract infections, minimally invasive surgery and robotic-assisted surgery. He also serves as an Assistant Residency Director and has an interest in improving resident and postgraduate education.
Guan Wu, MD, PHD, FACS

Dr. Guan Wu is an Associate Professor of Urology, Pathology, and Oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He received his medical degree and basic research training at the Peking University Health Science Center, Beijing, China. He received further postdoctoral research training and completed his urology residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center. As a physician-scientist, Dr. Wu's clinical interests are in urologic oncology and robotic surgery. His basic research efforts are focused on tumorigenic mechanisms and animal models related to kidney cancer critical genes. His basic research activities have been funded by the NCI, NSAUA, and other foundations. He has also served as an AUA Young Urologist Committee Member, NSAUA Representative, and NSAUA Research Committee Member.
