JCAHO Universal Protocol for Preventing Wrong Site, Wrong Procedure, Wrong Person Surgery

The American Urological Association (AUA) and the Urology Care Foundation endorse the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goal on the Universal Protocol for Preventing Wrong Site, Wrong Procedure, Wrong Person Surgery. The Protocol focuses on three objectives: a pre-operative verification process, marking the operative site and taking a "time out" immediately before starting the procedure.

The Protocol is based on the consensus of experts from the relevant clinical specialties and professional disciplines and is endorsed by more than 40 professional medical associations and organizations, including the AUA. http://www.jointcommission.org/assets/1/18/UP_Poster1.pdf.
