Urology practices need confidence that they will be appropriately reimbursed when providing patient access to newly FDA-approved drugs and therapies during the period before a permanent J code is established. However, billing with miscellaneous J codes can be complex and administratively burdensome, often creating uncertainty about whether full reimbursement will be received. This lack of confidence can delay adoption of new treatments and, ultimately, patient access to clinically appropriate therapies.

Recognizing the importance of timely patient access to newly FDA-approved drugs and therapies, the AUA, in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson, conducted focus groups, a membership survey, and interviews with healthcare professionals across a variety of practice settings. The objective was to assess current practice patterns related to the use of miscellaneous J codes, identify barriers to their effective implementation, and uncover best practices that could support more efficient integration and utilization of miscellaneous J codes within urology practices.
