Celebrating 50 years of Advancing Urologic Research

Banner celebrating the 50th anniversary of research

The American Urological Association is Pleased to Commemorate 50 Years of Research Support in the Field of Urology

A Legacy of Impact

Since 1975, nearly $40 million dollars has been awarded to over 1,000 urology researchers spanning the entire career pipeline, from medical students through to independent early career investigators. The awards support cutting edge research in all areas of urology, from basic science through to clinical trials. By funding this critical research, the Urology Care Foundation and the American Urological Association aim to increase and maintain the workforce of urology physician-scientists and researchers, and to catalyze the advancement of clinical practice and reduce the burden of urological disease through impactful research. We are excited to continue serving the urology research community with our annual award offerings and look forward to celebrating with you.

Pathways of research

Investing in Current & Future Research Leaders

The Urology Care Foundation has established a portfolio of mentored training awards that recruit young urologists and scientists into research and provide critical support to develop research leaders. These awards follow the path of a urology research career to help retain the most talented individuals in the field. By funding this critical research, the Urology Care Foundation and the American Urological Association aim to increase and maintain the workforce of urology physician-scientists and researchers, catalyze the advancement of clinical practice and reduce the burden of urological disease through impactful research.

The Footprint of Research Education and Mentorship

Since 2012, the Early-Career Investigators Workshop (ECIW) has helped young researchers turn their ground-breaking ideas into reality by helping them overcome federal funding challenges through a unique blend of grant writing training and mentorship sessions. There has been over 400 ECIW attendees.

The USMART Academy nurtures one-to-one mentorship relationships and community support. This allows mentees to develop to their full potential as scientists capable of independence, impactful research, and giving back as involved members of the urologic research community. Since 2017, USMART Academy has supported 50 mentees representing a range of research areas as they continue their transition to independence as urology physician-scientists.

From Research Scholar to Board Member

Larry, Lipshultz, MD

Larry Lipshultz, MD

Dr. Lipshultz is one of the very first Research Scholar Awardees! He is an early pioneer in male infertility research with what began as a two-year study of Sertoli cells and their role in spermatogenesis. He is now a world-renowned urologist, especially in men’s health, and has helped transform the field on topics ranging from testosterone replacement therapy to microsurgery. He currently serves on the Urology Care Foundation’s Board of Directors as a board member.

Arthur L. Burnett, MD, MBA

Arthur L. Burnett, MD, MBA

Dr. Burnett became a Research Scholar in 1994. He is a world-renowned expert in sexual medicine, focusing on lower genitourinary conditions and reconstruction, erectile dysfunction and penile abnormalities. His Foundation-supported research on nitric oxide and carbon monoxide as mediators of the urogenital system was critical to the development of medications to treat erectile dysfunction, such as VIAGRA®. Dr. Burnett is now a distinguished Professor of Urology and Director of the Basic Science Laboratory in Neuro-urology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Burnett previously served on the UCF's Board of Directors and currently serves as Mid-Atlantic Section Representative for the AUA's Board of Directors.

Introducing The Transformative Research Award

The Transformative Research Award will provide up to two years of support to established investigators with proven productivity, original contributions, and independent research. The program encourages recipients to contribute to the acceleration of urology by engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration and supporting the pursuit of paradigm-shifting research projects that will focus on exploring existing problems in urology from a new perspective, or introduce novel concepts, approaches, methodologies, instrumentation, or interventions.

“We are honored to co-chair the new Transformative Research Endowment Campaign to help provide critically needed funding to catapult and accelerate breakthroughs in patient care and cures.”

Dave Amerson, MBA and Larry Lipshultz, MD
UCF Board of Directors and Transformative Research Campaign Chairs
