Ricardo Arceo-Olaiz, MD

2019 AUA/Mexican Visiting Program Scholar

Dr. Arceo-Olaiz earned his medical degree from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México UNAM (1999-2006); he specialized in urology at the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición “Salvador Zubirán” in Mexico City (2006-2012). After finishing his residency, he trained in laparoscopy and urologic oncology during 2012 at the Hospital Universitario Fundación Alcorcón in Madrid, Spain. He then subspecialized in pediatric urology at the Instituto Nacional de Pediatría in Mexico City (2013-2015). He completed an observership in pediatric urology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia as part of the program exchange of the Open Medical Institute/American Austrian Foundation and its Mexican partner Alianza Médica para la Salud. He is a board certified urologist and the only Latin American certified in Pediatric Urology by the Joint Committee of Paediatric Urology/European Society for Paediatric Urology (FEAPU).

Dr. Arceo-Olaiz currently works as a pediatric urology attending at the Hospital del Niño y del Adolescente Morelense (Emiliano Zapata, Morelos) and at the Shriners Hospital for Children Mexico City. He is also part of the academic board of Alianza Médica para la Salud, which is a nonprofit association that partners with the Open Medical Institute in Salzburg to train Mexican physicians abroad. His main interest is pediatric urology, specifically minimally invasive surgery and reconstructive surgery such as hypospadias repair.

As part of the AUA/Mexican Visiting Scholar Program, Dr. Arceo-Olaiz will attend the 2019 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. Prior to the Conference, Dr. Arceo-Olaiz will visit San Antonio Children’s Hospital, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Christian Bach, FRCS, FEBU, MBBS, MD

2019 AUA/ Deutsche Gesellschaft für Urologie (DGU) Visiting Program Scholar

Dr. Bach graduated from the faculty of medicine at the Technical University of Munich in Germany. He completed my urology residency at the department of urology at the university-associated Klinikum Harlaching in Munich and was awarded an MD degree from the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich. Dr. Bach completed a 2-year EBU accredited endourology and stone fellowship in London and a 18 month fellowship in robotic assisted urological surgery and complex pelvic surgery in Bristol, UK. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Urol), the European Board of Urology (FEBU) and of the German Society of Urology.

Dr. Bach has published a number of scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, authored several book chapters and given numerous presentations to learned societies within my specialty. He has also peer reviewed articles for a variety of scientific urological journals. His research focuses on surgical treatment options for high-risk bladder and prostate cancer and was a Consultant Urological Surgeon in the Freeman hospital in Newcastle, UK from July 2014 to July 2016. In August 2016 he joined the Department of Urology of the RWTH Aachen as Head of Robotic Surgery and has established a comprehensive high-quality robotic surgery program.

As part of the AUA/DGU Visiting Scholar Program, Dr. Bach will attend the 2019 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. After the conference, Dr. Höfner will visit MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Aditya Bagrodia, MD

2019 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Scholar

Dr. Aditya Bagrodia is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he is the Dedman Family Scholar in Clinical Care. Dr. Bagrodia holds a bachelor of science degree from Rhodes College. While earning a medical degree with highest honors at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, he was awarded a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship in clinical research at UT Southwestern Medical Center. After graduating from residency in urology at UT Southwestern, he completed a fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he received an American Urological Association Urology Care Foundation Research Scholars Grant.

Dr. Bagrodia’s clinical and research focus centers on patients with germ cell tumors. His laboratory focuses on sequencing efforts to understand tumor evolution and heterogeneity in germ cell tumors as well as to identify novel biomarkers to recognize occult metastatic disease. He is actively working on molecular biomarkers to identify minimal residual disease burden. On the clinical side, Dr Bagrodia is actively involved with understanding and overcoming unique socioepidemiologic considerations that adversely impact oncologic outcomes in patients with germ cell tumors.

Dr. Bagrodia has conducted extensive research in urologic oncology, primarily in biomarker profiles and molecular signatures of urologic tumors as predictors of clinical outcomes. He has also been an investigator in studies that compare the efficacy of surgical techniques, analyze the influence of pre-existing clinical conditions on surgical outcomes, and evaluate the use of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in conjunction with surgical treatment of urologic cancers.

He is the principal author or co-author of more than 90 articles in peer-reviewed publications such as Journal of Clinical Oncology, Nature Genetics, European Urology, Journal of Urology, Urologic Oncology, and Urology. He is also a reviewer for many of these publications, as well as the British Journal of Urology, the Journal of Clinical Pathology, and Annals of Surgical Oncology.

As part of the AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Bagrodia will attend the 2019 Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Congress in Curitiba, Brazil. After the conference, Dr. Bagrodia will visit a Brazilian institution, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Judy Choi, MD

2019 Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Judy Choi, MD, is a urologist who specializes in the field of female pelvic and reconstructive surgery (FPMRS). She received extensive training in both general urology and female urology, and she specializes in urinary incontinence, vaginal and uterine prolapse, neurogenic bladder, voiding dysfunction, vaginal mesh complications, vesico-vaginal fistulas, urethral diverticula, bladder stones, painful bladder syndrome, and pelvic reconstruction. She is skilled in the most advanced surgical treatments for these conditions, including endoscopic techniques, robotic surgery, and neuromodulation.

A native of Southern California, Dr. Choi graduated from Yale University in psychology and neuroscience, then obtained her medical degree with Honors in Research from Cornell University. She completed her general surgery internship and urology residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where she received the American Urogynecologic Society Resident Scholar Award. Dr. Choi completed a fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at UCLA under Dr. Shlomo Raz, with whom she collaborated on a video surgical atlas of female urological procedures.

During her fellowship at UCLA, she was awarded both the 2014 Urology Care Foundation Research Scholar Award and a Pelvic Floor Disorders Research Foundation research grant to investigate how chronic stress modulates bladder motor and sensory function.

She has served as Assistant Professor in Urology at University of California, Irvine, since 2015. Her research interests focus on the pathophysiology underlying voiding dysfunction and urinary incontinence, as well as the development of treatment options for pelvic organ prolapse. She is currently collaborating with the Women’s Health Initiative, a multi-center, national study, to evaluate the impact of lifetime obesity, race/ethnicity, and behavioral lifestyles on urinary incontinence in the United States.

As part of the Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar Program, Dr. Choi will attend the 2019 JUA Congress in Nagoya, Japan. Prior to the Congress, Dr. Choi will visit Shinshu University in Nagano, Japan where she will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

R. Matthew Coward, MD, FACS

2019 Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar

R. Matthew (“Matt”) Coward, MD FACS is an Assistant Professor of Urology and Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Director of Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at UNC Fertility in Raleigh, NC, and Fellowship Program Director for the UNC Andrology and Men’s Health Fellowship.

A North Carolina native, Dr. Coward is a urologic microsurgeon specialized in the treatment of male fertility. He received his MD with Distinction from UNC and completed his internship in General Surgery and residency training in Urology at UNC. Board certified by the American Board of Urology, Dr. Coward completed a microsurgical fellowship in Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston with Dr. Larry Lipshultz from 2012-2013. He has since been consecutively named to the prestigious 2015-16 and 2017-2018 Best Doctors in America® lists, a distinction achieved by less than 5 percent of the physicians in the United States. He has also been the recipient of numerous academic awards throughout his career including Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Dr. Coward’s clinical practice focuses in the areas of male reproduction and fertility as well as male sexual dysfunction. As Director of Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at UNC Fertility, Dr. Coward is an NIH-funded investigator with the Reproductive Medicine Network, a collaborative group of centers of excellence that carries out multi-centered clinical trials in infertility. Having published more than 50 scientific articles and chapters in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, Dr. Coward’s research interests include clinical trials in reproductive medicine, male infertility, vasectomy and vasectomy reversal, sexual dysfunction, penile prostheses, hypogonadism, and urologic imaging. Dr. Coward serves as a peer reviewer for numerous journals, and he is an active member of the AUA, SESAUA, ASRM, SSMR, SMRU, SMSNA, and Society of Urologic Prosthetic Surgeons.

As part of the Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar Program, Dr. Coward will attend the 2019 JUA Congress in Nagoya, Japan. Following the Congress, Dr. Coward will visit Kobe University in Kobe, Japan where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Anuj Deep Dangi, MD

2019 AUA/Indian American Urological Association (IAUA) Chakrobortty Fellowship Program Scholar

Dr. Dangi currently works as a junior consultant in the Department of Urology at Christian Medical College in Vellore, India. He completed his Masters in Surgery from Maulana Azad Medical College in 2007 and Urology residency in 2012 from Christian Medical College. During his residency he was awarded the Shaliwan Rawal Memorial prize for being the best outgoing student, and was awarded the European Urology Residents Education Programme (EUREP) travel fellowship.

Dr. Dangi has an interest in the field of andrology, female pelvic and reconstructive urology, which he says is an area of huge unmet need in India. At the national level, he is a member of the Working Group that is formulating Indian Guidelines for the management of urethral strictures. Dr. Dangi is involved in the didactic and surgical training of urology residents in his department and supervises them in the formulation and execution of their Masters Research projects. Dr. Dangi has ten publications in peer reviewed journals and is a reviewer for the Indian Journal of Urology. In 2018 Dr. Dangi was awarded a Clinical Visit scholarship under the European Urology Scholarship Programme, that enabled him to visit the Sava Perovic Foundation and observe various adult and pediatric reconstructive surgeries.

Thomas Höfner, MD, FEBU

2019 AUA/ Deutsche Gesellschaft für Urologie (DGU) Visiting Program Scholar

Dr. Höfner is an associate professor of urology at University Hospital Mainz, Germany (Chief Prof. Axel Haferkamp). Dr. Höfner received his medical degree from the University of Hannover, Germany. He completed his residency at the University Heidelberg, Germany, and became a fellow of the European Board of Urology (FEBU) in 2015.

He performed postdoctoral research on prostate stem cells at the German Cancer Research Center and Heidelberg Institute for Stem Cell Technology and Experimental Medicine (HI-STEM gGmbh, Director: Prof. Andreas Trumpp) and became associate professor in urology in Mainz in 2017. His main scientific interests are prostate stem cells as well as focal therapy in localized prostate cancer. He received several awards in this field and authored more than 30 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Höfner´s clinical expertise is the surgical treatment of genitourinary cancers as well as systemic therapy for advanced urologic cancers.

As part of the AUA/DGU Visiting Scholar Program, Dr. Höfner will attend the 2019 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. After the conference, Dr. Höfner will visit Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Joao Alexandre Queiroz Juveniz, MD, PhD

2019 AUA/CAU Visiting Program Scholar

Dr Juveniz received his medical degree from Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) in 2005, General Surgery and Urology Residence (2006-2011), Urology PhD at São Paulo University Medical School (FMUSP) with Urologic Oncology (2016). He performed an observership at USC Institute of Urology – Los Angeles USA (2013), Florida Hospital Global Robotics Institute- Orlando USA (2014), minimally invasive surgery at Instituto La Floresta (CIMI) Caracas – Venezuela (2014), observing minimally treatments of Urology diseases.

Dr Juveniz is an Urologist and residence preceptor at University Hospital from Mato Grosso do Sul Federal University and Professor at the same Institution (UFMS Campo Grande – MS) since 2015. Physician Urologist at Cancer Hospital from Campo Grande (MS) and at a sexually transmitted infections center. Member since 2008 of the Brazilian Urology Society.

Dr. Juveniz treats men and women with all urological diseases, especially oncology, stones, miccional dysfunctions and sexually transmitted infections. He is an expert in Endourological, laparoscopic and Robotic surgeries. Dr. Juveniz’ s interested areas are minimally invasive surgeries, especially robotic surgeries, oncology urology treatments, scientific researches and medical education.

As part of the AUA/CAU Visiting Scholar Program, Dr. Juveniz will attend the 2019 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. After the conference, Dr. Juveniz visit the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he will observe Urology Robotics Surgeries and Urology Oncology treatments, as well as staffs activities and clinics.

Michiko Nakamura, MD

2019 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Dr. Nakamura is an assistant professor of urology in Hokkaido University Hospital, Sapporo, Japan. She received her medical degree from Hokkaido University, and then completed residency of urology at Hokkaido University Hospital and affiliated hospitals in Hokkaido. In addition, she have experienced with residency of pediatric urology at National Center for Child Health and Development in Tokyo. She is a certified physician of the Japanese Board of Pediatric Urology, Endourologic Surgeon authorized by Japanese Endourological Association, and Console Surgeon using the da Vinci Surgical System. Dr. Nakamura is interested in pediatric reconstructive surgeries, including hypospadias, female genitoplasty, megaureter, Mitrofanoff and Mace procedures, and bladder neck reconstruction. She intends to improve her skills in these procedures and try laparoscopically and robotics.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Nakamura will attend the 2019 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. After the conference, Dr. Nakamura will visit Nationwide Children’s Hospital where she will have opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Nadir Osman, MD

2019 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Nadir Osman, MD completed undergraduate medical studies at the University of Liverpool (UK) in 2006 graduating with honors. He undertook time out of the urological training program to undertake laboratory research in regenerative medicine at the University of Sheffield. He was awarded a PhD in 2014 for this work. Following completion of his urological training in 2018 he has been undertaking a travelling sub specialty fellowship in reconstructive urology. He has previously been an investigator on several trials of pharmacotherapies for lower urinary tract disorders as well as clinical studies investigating the urodynamic assessment of patients. He has a clinical and research interest in functional disorders of the lower urinary tract and urological reconstruction. He has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals as well books and book chapters and serves on the editorial board of Neurourology and Urodynamics as well as being a reviewer for several urology and science journals. In addition, he serves as a member of the European Association of Urology (EAU) Urethral stricture guideline panel as well as being a member of the EAU young academic urologists functional urology group.

Marcelo Pimentel, MD

2019 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Scholar

Dr. Pimentel is an assistant professor of Urology at the Universidade de Passo Fundo (UPF), Brazil, and works as a urologist at the Hospital de Clínicas de Passo Fundo (HCPF), Brazil. He received his medical degree from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil. After medical school, Dr. Pimentel completed a residency in Urology at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) and a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the Istituto Europeo di Oncologia in Milan, Italy. Upon returning to Brazil he attained a Master’s degree in Surgical Science researching markers of neuroendocrine differentiation in castration resistant prostate cancer. After that he obtained a PhD, valuating the influence of previous experience in advanced laparoscopy on robotic surgical skills, both from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Dr. Pimentel is interested in all aspects of Urology, with special attention to endourology, lithiasis, BPH, minimally invasive procedures and urological cancer. In addition to his clinical interests, he also has a strong interest in the medical education of residents and medical students at UPF and HCPF.

Achilles Ploumidis, MD

2019 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Dr. Achilles Ploumidis graduated from the Medical School of the University of Athens (UOA) and completed his residency (General Surgery and Urology) in Athens where he was also trained in pediatric urology and Urogynecology. He further graduated from the two-year postgraduate program of the UOA: "Minimally Invasive Surgery, Robotic Surgery and Telesurgery". In 2013 he defended his thesis (UOA) and he received his PhD.

He was further trained in robotic surgery of the upper urinary tract and Urogynaecology at OLV Vattikuti Robotic Surgery Institute in Belgium, under the supervision of Prof. Alexander Mottrie, with a scholarship from the European Robotic Urological Association (ERUS). He participated in research and clinical programs in the field of urogynecology and single site robotic surgery. During that time he was also an instructor in robotics and laparoscopic surgery at ORSI Robotic Training Center, a position that he holds until today.

He has been involved in basic and clinical research for prostate and bladder cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia, robotic surgery, stone surgery and endourology. He is a full time consultant at the Athens Institute of Robotic & Endoscopic Urology at the Athens Medical Group.

Vedamurthy Reddy Pogula, MD

2019 AUA/Indian American Urological Association (IAUA) Chakrobortty Fellowship Program Scholar.

Dr.Vedamurthy Reddy Pogula works as Associate Professor in the department of Urology at Narayana Medical College, Nellore, India. Dr. Reddy specializes in the area of reconstructive urology. He has done significant work in the area of female urethral stricture disease and he specializes in urethral augmentation with oral mucosa and vaginal mucosa. He also contributed significantly in urethral substitution procedures using Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) graft in males.

Dr. Reddy completed his Master’s degree in General Surgery from S.V. Medical College, Tirupathi, India. Followed by M.Ch in Urology from SVIMS (Sri Venkateswara University of Medical Sciences) Tirupathi, India. He is the senior faculty member in the department of Urology who is actively participating in teaching programs for Urology residents. He is an organizing team member of the Andhra Pradesh Society of Genitourinary Surgeons Conference (APSOGUS) 2013 held in Vijayawada, India. He has been in charge of the Quiz program for Urology residents from all over the Andhra Pradesh state which was conducted in APSOGUS 2018. He is also the organizing Secretary for the prestigious Prof A.Ranganatha Rao Midterm CUE 2019 on Laparoscopic Urology held at Nellore, India.

Dr. Reddy has 18 publications to his credit and has given 93 scientific presentations in both national and international conferences. His recent focus is on Laparoscopic Urology and Urooncolgy.

As part of AUA/IAUA Chakrobortty Fellowship Program, Dr. Reddy will attend the 2019 AUA Annual meeting in Chicago. After the conference, Dr. Reddy will visit Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Giorgio Russo, MD

2019 AUA/European Association of Urology (EAU) Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Prof. Giorgio I. Russo, is a University Professor at the UOC of Urology at the Policlinico of Catania, a specialist in Urology, Andrology and Robotic Surgery. He deals with dedication and interest in the prevention and treatment of urological and Uro-oncology diseases. Specialized in Urology in 2017, he carried out hospital and PhD activities at the "G. Rodolico" Polyclinic in Catania.

From July 2017 to January 2018 he carried out clinical and research activities at the University of Tübingen (Germany) with Prof. Arnulf Stenzl. He also had the opportunity to write over120 scientific articles, published in international and national journals and book chapters. He is also a member of several National and International Scientific Societies, and is currently Coordinator of the Scientific Committee of the Resources and Communication Office of the Italian Society of Urology and Chairman of the YAU Men's Health Working Group of the European Association of Urology and of the Uroblog group (http://www.uroblog.it/).

He works with dedication and interest in the prevention of prostate disease through changes in lifestyle and nutrition.His areas of clinical activity are essentially benign prostatic disease, prostate, bladder, kidney and testicular carcinoma, andrology, erectile dysfunction and many others.

Michael Santomauro, MD

2019 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Academic Exchange Scholar

Dr. Santomauro, a native of Collingswood, New Jersey, holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy, and a M.D. from Thomas Jefferson University. Upon completion of his urology residency at Naval Medical Center, San Diego, he reported to University of Southern California to complete a fellowship in Robotics and Advanced Laparoscopy.

Prior to joining Naval Medical Center San Diego as a staff urologist, Dr. Santomauro was assigned with the US Navy to Naval Hospital Pensacola. While at Naval Hospital Pensacola, he became an Assistant Professor of Surgery, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Once he completed his tenure at Naval Hospital Pensacola, Dr. Santomauro was transferred to Naval Medical Center San Diego, to begin his staff tour as a mentor to residents in urology with an emphasis on robotics. While at NMCSD, Dr. Santomauro was awarded the Associate Master Clinician Award.

Dr. Santomauro has authored over 20 peer reviewed articles and book chapters with an emphasis on minimal invasive surgery. Dr. Santomauro is board certified in Urology. Currently, he is an active duty Commander in the United States Navy stationed in San Diego, CA.

As part of the AUA/SBU Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Santomauro will attend the 2019 Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Congress in Curitiba, Brazil. Alessandro Corrêa Prudente dos Santos, MD, MSc, PhD

2019 AUA/Sociedade Brasileira de Urologia (SBU) Visiting Program Scholar

Dr. Prudente is a urologist and professor of medicine at the Federal University of Rondonia in Northern Brazil. He completed his urology residency program and Master's and Doctoral degrees at the University of Campinas – Brazil. His interests are mostly in neurourology, functional urology and urodynamics. Today he is the only urologist in the state of Rondonia with a focus on functional urology and neuro urology for adults and children. He is also responsible for this area of formation of new urologists in the local urology residency program.

As part of the AUA/SBU Visiting Scholar Program, Dr. Prudente will attend the 2019 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. After the conference, Dr. Prudente will visit Boston Children’s Hospital, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.

Shuichi Tatarano, M.D., Ph.D.

2019 AUA/Japanese Urological Association (JUA) Academic Exchange Program Scholar

Shuichi Tatarano, MD, PhD has been named a 2019 AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program Scholar. Dr. Tatarano is an assistant professor of urology at the Kagoshima University, Japan.

Dr. Tatarano received his medical degree from the Kagoshima University. He completed his residency at the Kagoshima University. He is a certified laparoscopic and robotic surgeon, clinical oncological specialist registered by Japanese Clinical Oncological Association and board-certified transplant physician by the Japanese Society for Transplantation. He researched microRNA in urologic cancer and received his PhD degree from the doctoral course at Kagoshima University. He specializes in the surgical care of patients with urologic cancer and kidney transplantation.

As part of the AUA/JUA Academic Exchange Program, Dr. Tatarano will attend the 2019 AUA Annual Meeting in Chicago. Prior to the conference, Dr. Tatarano will visit Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where he will have the opportunity to observe urologic surgeries and procedures, as well as attend staff activities and clinics.
