Meet the 2016 – 2017 Class
Jonathan Bergman, MD, MPH
Western Section
Dr. Bergman is Assistant Professor of Urology and Family Medicine at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). He is also UCLA Urology's Associate Program Director and Deputy Quality Officer, and is the Veteran's Health Administrations Chief of Ethics. He earned his undergraduate degree, phi beta kappa and summa cum laude, from Yale University, where he was class valedictorian, and his medical degree from UCLA, where he had a full-tuition Regents' Scholarship and graduated Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his surgery and urology residency training at UCLA. In 2013, Dr. Bergman completed a two-year fellowship in health services research as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at UCLA, during which time he earned an MPH from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.
Trinity Bivalacqua, MD, PhD
Mid-Atlantic Section
Dr. Bivalacqua is Associate Professor of Urology and Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and is Director of Urologic Oncology at The James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute. He received his undergraduate degree, medical and PhD (pharmacology) graduate degrees from Tulane University and completed a urology residency at Johns Hopkins. He completed a Urology Care Foundation post-doctoral fellowship in 2007. He is actively involved in resident and medical student education and serves as Associate Program Director of the urologic oncology fellowship. He has a clinical subspecialty interest in prostate and bladder cancer as well as sexual dysfunction. He has a basic translational research lab focusing on urothelial carcinoma and regenerative medicine which is supported by peer-reviewed grant funding. In 2012, he received an AUA Rising Star in Urology Research Award.
Edward Cherullo, MD
North Central Section
Dr. Cherullo is Associate Professor of Urology and Urology Residency Program Director within the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine. He completed his urology training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and then joined University Hospitals Case Medical Center. He was Interim Chair of the Urologic Institute in 2015. His academic interests include complex upper urinary tract reconstruction, minimally invasive and robotic surgery and urologic oncology. He has published on natural orifice and single site surgery in both adults and children. Dr. Cherullo's current regional academic leadership roles include President of the Ohio Urologic Society and Historian of the North Central Section of the AUA.
Hillary Copp, MD, MS
Western Section
Dr. Copp is Associate Professor of Pediatric Urology at University of California San Francisco. She graduated summa cum laude with a degree in biological sciences from University of California Santa Barbara and received her medical degree from Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Copp completed her urology residency at the University of Virginia and pediatric urology fellowship at Stanford University where she also earned a master's degree in epidemiology. She is a three-time recipient of a Urologic Diseases in America grant and received an NIH-sponsored career development award. Her research focuses on pediatric UTI, antibiotic adherence and uropathogen resistance. Dr. Copp is a Section Editor for the Kelalis-King-Belman Textbook of Clinical Pediatric Urology, the Secretary/Treasurer for the Society for Fetal Urology, and the Chair for the 2016 Society for Pediatric Urology Meeting.
Julie Franc-Guimond, MD
Northeastern Section
Dr. Franc-Guimond is Associate Professor of Urology at Université de Montréal/ CHU Sainte-Justine, Québec. She obtained her medical degree from Université de Sherbrooke and completed her residency in urology at Université de Montréal. She then completed fellowship training in pediatric urology at Jackson Memorial Hospital (University of Miami) and Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children Thomas Jefferson University. Her main interests are obstructive uropathy, neurogenic bladder and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Franc-Guimond has been actively involved with the Northeastern Section of the AUA (NSAUA). She helped plan annual meetings, served on various committees and was a Canadian representative on the NSAUA Board of Directors. She also represented the NSAUA Section on the AUA Young Urologists Committee.
George Haleblian, MD
New England Section
Dr. Haleblian recently joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is the Program Director of the urology residency and director of the Brigham and Women’s comprehensive kidney stone program. He specializes in metabolic and surgical management of urinary calculi. Dr. Haleblian received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and his M.D. from the University of Southern California. His urologic training commenced at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center followed by a fellowship in Endourology a Duke University. Regionally, he is actively involved in the New England section of the AUA, having served on the Board of Directors.
Brant Inman, MD
Southeastern Section
Dr. Inman is Cary N. Robertson Associate Professor and Vice Chief of Urology at the Duke Cancer Institute of Duke University. Dr. Inman received his medical degree from the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada), completed his urology residency at Université Laval (Québec, Canada) and his urologic oncology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, USA). His area of clinical expertise is the surgical treatment of genitourinary cancers, with a particular emphasis on bladder cancer. From a research standpoint, Dr. Inman's laboratory is focused on novel therapies and diagnostic tests for genitourinary cancer, with a special interest in immunotherapy and heat targeted therapies.
Brian Irwin, MD
New England Section
Dr. Irwin is Assistant Professor of Surgery in Urology at the University of Vermont (UVM) as a member of the University of Vermont Medical Group. He specializes in the use of minimally invasive techniques (advanced laparoscopy, robotics, single site surgery, etc) in the treatment of benign and malignant urologic conditions. He is a graduate of Bates College (Lewiston, ME) and the University of Vermont. He received his general surgery and urological training at Indiana University (Indianapolis, IN) and the University of Connecticut School of Medicine (Farmington, CT). Dr. Irwin completed a clinical fellowship in minimally invasive surgery/endourology at the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (Cleveland, OH). After completing training, he returned home to Vermont and joined the faculty at UVM.
Tobias Köhler, MD, MPH, FACS
North Central Section
Dr. Köhler is Associate Professor and Residency Program Director at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois. He completed a fellowship in Andrology at Northwestern University in Chicago. His residency, MPH and undergraduate degrees were completed at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Dr. Köhler's chief interests include sexual dysfunction, infertility, low testosterone and resident education. Dr. Köhler is an active board member of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America, is Vice Chair of the AUA Public Media Committee, Chair of the North Central Section (NCS) of the AUA's Young Urologists Committee and Illinois State Representative of the NCSAUA Board. He was also the 2015 and 2016 NCSAUA nominee for the AUA's Gold Cystoscope Award.
Costas Lallas, MD, FACS
Mid-Atlantic Section
Dr. Lallas is Professor of Urology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. Departmentally, he was recently promoted to Vice Chair of Academic Affairs. He serves as Director of Undergraduate Medical Education, Associate Program Director for the urology residency, and Co-Director for Endourology Society-recognized fellowship in minimally invasive urologic oncology. Institutionally, he is Director of Robotic Surgery for Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Co-Director for the Multidisciplinary Small Renal Mass Clinic of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center. Regionally, he has been Secretary for the Philadelphia Urologic Society for the last two years. Nationally, he is in his second year on the AUA Laparoscopic, Robotic and New Surgical Technologies (LRNST) Committee.
Paul Maroni, MD
South Central Section
Dr. Maroni is Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Urology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. He is also Director of Robotic Surgery at the University of Colorado Hospital and Operations Director of the Urologic Oncology Clinic. He completed his urology residency training at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and then finished a urologic oncology fellowship at Indiana University. Dr. Maroni's clinical interests include open and minimally invasive surgical management of prostate, kidney and testis cancer. Research and academic interests include quality improvement in surgery, effective educational techniques for surgical learners and quality of life assessment in cancer survivors.
Brian McNeil, MD
New York Section
Dr. McNeil is Vice-Chair of Urology and Associate Urology Residency Program Director at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He completed a clinical fellowship in urologic oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center following research fellowships in urologic oncology at both the National Cancer Institute and The James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute. Dr. McNeil completed his post-graduate training in surgery and urology at Loyola University Medical Center, where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Morehouse College, Dr. McNeil's focus is urologic care in medically underserved communities, a dilemma that is international in scope and which he strongly believes we must "think globally and act locally" to address.
Nicole Miller, MD
Southeastern Section
Dr. Miller is Associate Professor of Urologic Surgery at Vanderbilt University. She received her MD from the University of Pittsburgh and urology residency training at the University of Virginia. Dr. Miller completed a two-year fellowship in endourology/minimally invasive surgery at Indiana University. She specializes in the treatment of nephrolithiasis and laser surgery for BPH. Her research interests include the pathophysiology of nephrolithiasis and BPH, stone composition and antibiotic selection for endourologic procedures. She is a major contributor of prostate tissue to Vanderbilt University's Biorepository in the Center for Benign Urologic Diseases. Dr. Miller is an Editorial Board Member for The Journal of Urology®, Co-director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery/Endourology Fellowship at Vanderbilt and member of the AUA guidelines panel for the Surgical Management of Nephrolithiasis.
Moben Mirza, MD, FACS
South Central Section
Dr. Mirza is Assistant Professor of Urology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He received his undergraduate education at Northwestern University in Environmental Science & Engineering. He completed medical school and his urology residency at the University of New Mexico. After fellowship, he had the distinct privilege of joining his mentors on the University of Kansas faculty. Dr. Mirza has had the benefit of excellent teachers and has developed a strong passion for educating students, residents and fellows. He is the clerkship Director of Urology and serves on the Dean's education council. Dr. Mirza serves in hospital leadership roles and is President of the Kansas Urologic Society. He participates actively in community service, interfaith initiatives and volunteer efforts.
Amanda North, MD
New York Section
Dr. North is Assistant Professor of Urology and Pediatrics at Montefiore Medical Center. She graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Religion and a certificate in Latin American Studies. Her medical degree was obtained from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha. She continued her residency training at Montefiore Medical Center before completing a fellowship in pediatric urology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. North joined the faculty at Montefiore Medical Center in 2007 and is the Director of the Life Skills Program. She also is Chair of the Social Media Committee of the Society for Pediatric Urology. Her research interest is in physician burn-out and improving physician well-being.
Alp Sener, MD, PhD, FRCSC
Northeastern Section
Dr. Sener is Assistant Professor in the Departments of Surgery, Microbiology and Immunology at Western University and is Director of the Urology Residency Program and the Kidney Transplant Fellowship Program. Following his PhD and MD degrees from the University of Calgary, he pursued urology training at Western University. He then completed a two-year fellowship in multiorgan transplantation at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Sener has authored over 160 peer-reviewed articles and abstracts, and maintains an active translational research laboratory focusing on developing novel methods of mitigating organ injury associated with transplantation. He is involved in promoting research and education through his leadership roles on international urology and transplant organizations.
Jay Shah, MD
South Central Section
Dr. Shah is Assistant Professor in the MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) Department of Urology. He received urology residency training at Columbia University Medical Center where he was named Physician of the Year and inducted into the Gold Foundation Humanism Honor Society. He completed a three-year fellowship in urologic oncology at MDACC where he was supported by a Urology Care Foundation Scholarship and a T32 training grant. Dr. Shah currently serves as Center Medical Director of the MDACC Genitourinary Center as well as Director of the MDACC Bladder Cancer Robotics Program. Board-certified in medical quality, he also serves as an institutional Quality Officer. Dr. Shah's clinical and academic interests center on bladder cancer with a particular focus on surgical outcomes research.
Sean Stroup, MD
Western Section
Dr. Stroup is Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of Urologic Oncology and Research at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. He serves as Chair of the AUA Young Urologists Committee and was selected for the 2016 AUA/EAU Exchange Scholars Program. Dr. Stroup received his medical degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine. He completed residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego and a Society of Urologic Oncology Fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the University of California, San Diego after serving as a Battalion Surgeon with the 1st Marine Division, USMC. Dr. Stroup is an active researcher with over 50 publications and works on the AUA Core Curriculum for Testicular Cancer and the AUA Working Group for Prostate Biopsy Complications.
Elizabeth B. Takacs, MD
North Central Section
Dr. Takacs currently serves as Clinical Associate Professor of Urology at the University of Iowa. She is certified by the American Board of Urology. The focus of her practice is female urology. Dr. Takacs received her medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine where she also completed a postdoctoral research fellowship. She completed her residency at the State University of New York at Buffalo, followed by a fellowship in female urology, incontinence and urodynamics at the University of Texas Southwestern, Dallas.
Ryan Terlecki, MD, FACS
Southeastern Section
Dr. Terlecki is Reconstructive Urologist at Wake Forest University. After training under a recognized world leader in reconstructive urology, he completed two separate fellowships in this field. He is now Director of the Men's Health Clinic at Wake Forest University and Director of the institution's fellowship in reconstructive urology, prosthetic urology and infertility. Dr. Terlecki is supported by multiple grants with research involving models of wound healing within the lower urinary and genital tracts. He is investigating novel clinical applications of cell and tissue-based therapies for multiple urologic conditions. Additionally, he was a 2012 AUA Academic Exchange Scholar and the current Liaison Representative to the American College of Surgeons Health Policy Advisory Council for the Young Fellows Association.
