The AUA's Fundamentals in Urology course is designed to ensure urology residents and urologic advanced practice providers (NPs and PAs) have an adequate foundation in the basic pathophysiology of clinical urology. The most popular AUA course for residents, Fundamentals in Urology welcomes hundreds of attendees each year, looking to expand their education and gain a fundamental knowledge of the "why" behind a broad expanse of general urologic conditions.

Target Audience

This course is designed for urology residents and allied health professionals. Emphasis is on basic sciences and the clinical applicability to urology.

The Fundamentals in Urology course is designed to apply basic science knowledge and principles in development of treatment algorithms. NEW this year, the course has been redesigned to 3 days to allow for less time out of the office and in a convenient location for traveling out of state!  This course will provide attendees with valuable skills in developing a rational methodological approach to application of knowledge which will contribute to positive outcomes for patients. New topics for this year include Reflux, Obstruction, and Undescended Testes- Causes and Clinical Implications and Medical and Surgical Management of ED. Attendees will discover the importance of the study of basic sciences and how it transfers into the lifelong learning process and medical practice. This course is designed to ensure a fundamental knowledge of the "why" behind a broad expanse of general urologic conditions. A thorough knowledge of the basic science behind the treatments will allow for better counseling and education of patients by all clinical urologic practitioners.

NEW this year- all registration options include online educational modules. This course features enhanced programming that allows registrants to access additional online learning resources and modules at the convenience of their home for less time away from the office! The meeting syllabus is a comprehensive study guide, providing in-depth review of every urologic subject that consists of all of the course slides. A digital copy in both color and black and white will be provided to all attendees on the AUAUniversity one week prior to the course at no charge. Cancellation Policy

Live Course

An administrative fee of 15% is assessed if registration is cancelled up to six weeks prior to the course. If registration is cancelled four to six weeks from the course, the cancellation fee is 50% of the registration fee paid. No registration fees will be refunded less than four weeks prior to the course.

Webcast

Cancellations must be made no later than one week prior to the live course. Subscription fees will not be refunded after the cancellation period. Purchases after the live course date are not eligible for a refund.

Registration Transfer

Customers switching from an option of lesser value to a higher value will be required to pay the difference in cost between the two options. Switching to an option of lesser value from a higher value must be made no later than six weeks prior to the course and will be subject to an administrative fee of 15% of the cost of the course from which they are transferring. Transfer of registration from a higher value option to an option of lesser value past six weeks prior to the course will not receive a refund.

Pre-Registration will be available on Thursday, June 6, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the foyer of Indiana Ballroom. Registration will resume on Friday morning, June 7, from 6:45- 7:30 am.

Meals

A continental breakfast and coffee breaks will be offered Friday through Sunday. Lunch & Learns with the Faculty will also be available for attendees to participate in on Friday and Saturday. Information regarding Lunch & Learns will be sent in the Spring to registered attendees and is based on a sign up.

Dress

The suggested attire for the meeting is business casual. Temperatures in the meeting room may be chilly, so we suggest bringing a light jacket or sweater.

"In the late 1980s, Professors Jay Y. Gillenwater and Stuart Howards of the University of Virginia conceived the idea of a basic science tutorial for urology residents.

Their concept was loosely based on a four-week Ophthalmology course held in New England. The rationale for both educational seminars was that medical education across the country was disparate and had moved away from pathophysiology, leading to an exposure to disease entities without a formal understanding of how the disease deviated from "normal." Hence, the target audience was residents early in their training as opposed to a board review structure..."

• Pathology
  • This course provides urologists and allied health professionals an overview of the main pathological characteristics and biology of common neoplasms of the kidney, urinary tract, prostate and testis.
  • Learning Objectives:
    • Describe the common tumors and their top differential diagnoses in a given GU organ and clinic pathological setting.
    • Identify the important pathological features, molecular alterations and behavior of common GU tumor entities.
    • Interpret the latest classification schemes, contemporary grading practices and commonly used ancillary techniques in pathologic diagnosis.
    • Determine the essential elements in the pathology reporting of common GU tumors and discuss their clinical relevance.       
• Urodynamics
  • This course provides a detailed overview of urodynamic testing techniques and pitfalls including hydrodynamic principles. Emphasis is placed on the interpretation of urodynamics, including recognizing abdominal and detrusor physiologic events, urethral resistance during bladder filling and micturition, urinary incontinence, and recognition of physiologic and technical artifacts.
  • Learning Objectives:
    • Apply knowledge of lower urinary tract function and electronic measurement of pressure, flow and electromyography to performance of a multichannel urodynamic test including prestudy uroflowmetry, filling cystometrogram and voiding pressure flow study.
